    2. What is the Internet?
      • It is a "network of networks“
      • consists of millions of smaller domestic, academic, business, and government networks,
      • worldwide, publicly accessible network of interconnected computer networks that transmit data using the standard Internet Protocol (IP).
    3. History
      • ARPANET started in 1972
      • TCP/IP occurred in July 1977
      • links were all converted to TCP/IP in 1982
      • late 1980s, first Internet service providers (ISP)
      • World Wide Web in 1990

      • define: meaning of word following (no space)
      • translate pages by clicking translate button
      • Google - Language tools allow you to translate any text using Google
      • choose language and paste text and then translate

      • find a person by name and city
      • find a business phone number by adding in the other information
      • stocks by typing in stock code then click stock quotes on results page
    14. Travelling ?
      • flight information (www.flightarrivals.com) just type in flight carrier and number
      • find maps by typing in addresses
      • check airport weather by typing flight carrier and number and three letter airport code Toronto (YYZ)

      • Google - images
      • Advanced image Search for searching by size or type
      • strict filtering to avoid adult images

      • Directory format
      • Google - News (4500 news organizations)
      • search news stories
      • sort by date option
      • select by Nation at bottom of results page
      • translate foreign news by right-clicking story and choosing language
      • Advanced News Search

      • +file type (.wav, .avi, mpeg)
      • Google - pdf, doc, etc.
      • choose file type from advanced
    18. Google - Toolbar add-in
      • Downloaded and installed into Browser
      • allow blocked pop-ups
      • highlight button to highlight searched words in a resulting document / page
    19. Froogle - for products or services for sale
      • sort by price
      • limit results by category
      • Advanced search by category listing
    20. Google - Groups
      • listings of newsgroups which are postings by people
      • search by topic, then by date
      • Advanced group search
      • select discussion thread to follow topic
      • post a reply (response)
      • post a new message
