  1. 1. 2009 Jeff Goldblum TRASH Tournament: Rico’s Roughnecks Questions by: Rico, Miran T., Colin M., Sinan U. Tossups 1. This actress has numerous citations on the blog GoFugYourself, where she is consistently referred to only by her last name, in all-capital letters and where she's been dinged for outfits such as a yellow suit whose collar “makes it look like she just recently feasted on the carcass of some fresh prey “ and a “velvet coat over velvet pants with a massive fur hat”. Before her success in mainstream films, she appeared in a number of arthouse films such as Derek Jarman's Edward II and Orlando. During this time, she also developed a performance art piece “The Maybe” wherein she lived on display in a glass box for a week. In 2001, she appeared in (*) The Deep End and Vanilla Sky as an executive of the Life Extension company. In 2008, she had a role in the Coen brothers' Burn After Reading, co-starring with George Clooney for the second time in as many years. For ten points, name this British actress best known for her Oscar-winning role in Michael Clayton and as the White Witch in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Answer: Tilda Swinton 2 A lie detector, jet-pack fuel, a Geiger counter, a xylophone, shark repellent, a roulette wheel and pool table, a washing machine, a water pump, a telegraph, a battery recharger, soap (made from plant fats), lead radiation suits and make-up, a helium balloon (made with rubber raincoats sewn together), and (*) shark repellant. But never a seaworthy raft. These are all objects with a shared provenance, created by a certain character mostly using materials such as bamboo and coconuts. FTP, name their creator who embarked on a “three-hour” tour in a classic TV sitcom. Answer: Objects improvised by the Professor on Gilligan's Island (or the Professor once the last sentence is reached - be generous in accepting CKEs before then) 3. Their debut album includes a stripped-down hidden track called “Poor Song” about someone who's “afraid of a lot of things” but not “of loving you”, which plays after the end of “Modern Romance”. Before it was released in 2006, their sophomore album was rumored to be a concept album about the lead singer's cat “Coco Beware”; this turned out to be false, although the first single off the album, their most successful to date, was about a (*)feline that would show the singer “where the light is”. Another track from the same album, about imploring a lover not to leave, was recently named one of the best songs of the decade by Pitchfork. FTP name this New York-based art rock group, headed by Karen O, whose songs include “Maps” and “Gold Lion”. Answer: Yeah Yeah Yeahs 4. Moves in this sport are commonly referred to in competition using four or five character codes. There have been two fatal head injuries in the history of the sport, both resulting from attempts at a 307C. More common are wrist injuries, from repetitive impact, and shoulder injuries. Competitors aim for what they refer to as a “rip”, so-called because it produces a sound similar to ripping a piece of paper. The opposite result - (*)landing flat – causes a sharp pain familiar to even recreational practitioners of this sport, though rarely dangerous even from 10 meters, the maximum height in competition. FTP name this sport practiced by Alexandre Despatie [“day-pa-tee”] and Mark Louganis, in which competitors jump from a platform or springboard and perform acrobatic moves before hitting the water.
