  • 2. 1. Introduction
    • Cloud Computing is a general term referring to storage and applications which are attached to the internet – the cloud
    • The idea of using remote servers to store data and host applications is not new
    • The cloud technology is attractive to companies who don’t have their own IT support
  • 3. 2. Introduction
    • Many cloud applications are available today from companies such as Amazon, Google, IBM, Microsoft etc
    • These relate to online storage and computing services etc
  • 4. 3. Introduction
    • If your computer is stolen the information is safely stored on a secure server
    • The ideas are not new – currently 69% of computer users in the USA use cloud features e.g. remote email
    • BitTorrent and Skype are obvious examples of cloud computing
  • 5. 4. Amazon – S3
    • Amazon S3 - simple storage system
    • Amazon S3 provides a simple web services interface that can be used to store and retrieve any amount of data, at any time, from anywhere on the web
    • It gives any developer access to the same highly scalable, reliable, fast, inexpensive data storage infrastructure that Amazon uses to run its own global network of web sites
    • Supports the SOAP protocol
  • 6. 5. Google Apps
    • Based around Google Mail
    • Collaboration tools for office and campus
      • Word processing
      • Spreadsheet
      • Calendar
    • A document can easily be imported into Google Docs and then uploaded to the cloud
    • Co-workers can share this online copy of each doc, spreadsheet or presentation
  • 7. 6. Google Android
    • This is a mobile phone operating system which is integrated into the cloud
  • 8. 7. Microsoft
    • The Azure Services platform is a major initiative by Microsoft into cloud computing
  • 9. 8. Windows Azure
    • Windows Azure is a cloud services operating system that serves as the development, service hosting, and service management environment for the Azure Services Platform
    • Windows Azure provides developers with on-demand compute and storage to host and manage web applications on the internet through Microsoft data centres
  • 10. 10. Development
    • Windows Azure fully supports Microsoft Web technologies such as ASP.NET, Internet Information Services, and Visual Studio 2008
    • Developers can immediately use their existing skills to efficiently create, test, deploy, manage & monetize web services
  • 11. 11. Standards Based Platform
    • Windows Azure supports popular standards and protocols including SOAP, REST, and XML
    • Also supports Eclipse, Ruby, PHP, and Python etc
