Traditional technology stores data in specially constructed “data warehouses”.
This combines data from multiple data sources into a single location.
Design and setup of a data warehouse is critical to its functionality.
You need to know what questions you want to answer before you begin.

Example: Booking a flight online
You are asked a series of questions in a set order, e.g. Date of flight, Departing Airport, Destination, Seat Type
You must answer all questions to return a result.
It is possible to return an answer “There are no flights available”!

Traditional technology works by using the answers you provide to search for available flights.
This uses a process known as “slicing and dicing”.
A search for flights departing on 01/01/2009 from Leeds Bradford to Murcia in Standard Class will technically do the following:

Data warehouses are built and stored on disks.
They have to be setup in this way to reduce the search time, each question reducing the number of available options for the next.
The major drawback is the total inflexibility of this solution, and the time and money required to build.
So how do we work differently?
