We focus on 4 areas in our educational programs: LITERACY SCHOOL PARTNERSHIPS SUPPLEMENTAL EDUCATION COMMUNITY-BASED EDUCATIONKhmer ClassesLiteracy CampsClassroom LibrariesKhmer literacy classes and camps to help students learn how to read and write inKhmer, the Cambodian language. Khmer is notoriously difficult having been alanguage known to the educational elite of Cambodia’s past.

We focus on 4 areas in our educational programs: LITERACY SCHOOL PARTNERSHIPS SUPPLEMENTAL EDUCATION ION ED EDUCAT COM MUNITY-BASChild-to-Child ClubsUsing an active learning approach, the Child-to-Child (CtC) initiative encourageschildren to identify the most pressing problems in their communities by workingwith other members of their ‘Child Club.’
  27. LITERACYKHMER CLASSES A B O U T In October 2006, we tested the students and found that many in PEPY’s first partner school could not read and write in Khmer. We decided to focus on Khmer literacy by increasing students’ access to books and encouraging teachers to incorporate more books into their classes.
  28. LITERACYLITERACY CAMPS A B O U T Literacy Camps instill a love of learning in students, while sharing new literacy methodology with teachers.
  29. LITERACYLITERACY CAMPS A C H I E V E M E N T S Over 70 teachers and 600 students participated in PEPY’s Literacy Camp in 2010.
  30. SUPPLEMENTAL EDUCATIONCREATIVE LEARNING CLASSES (CLC) A B O U T Students use computers and open‐source programming software to create games, build robots, and conduct learning experiments in their communities.
  31. SUPPLEMENTAL EDUCATIONCREATIVE LEARNING CLASSES (CLC) A C H I E V E M E N T S Over 200 students a week learn critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills.

Khmer for: CommunitiesSCHOOL PARTNERSHIPS Developing SchoolsSAHAKOOM APEEWAHT SALA A B O U T SAS identifies schools that have a certain level of buy-in from their principals & communities and spends 3 years working with them to identify their needs and priorities, helping them to cultivate their own capabilities and to build strong School Support Committees (SSCs).
  33. Khmer for: CommunitiesSCHOOL PARTNERSHIPS Developing SchoolsSAHAKOOM APEEWAHT SALA A C H I E V E M E N T S A Chanleas Dai school & community have been learning how to grow mushrooms! This initiative is the beginning of what they hope will be a life skills program for students that offers agricultural knowledge and income-generating ideas.
  34. Khmer for: CommunitiesSCHOOL PARTNERSHIPS Developing SchoolsSAHAKOOM APEEWAHT SALA A C H I E V E M E N T S Teacher team leaders have led their school in making effective learning resources using minimal materials. The school fundraised over half of the budget for its resource-making workshop.
  35. SUPPLEMENTAL EDUCATIONSCHOLARSHIPS A B O U T The goal is to enable motivated young leaders from Chanleas Dai and the surrounding area to afford the costs associated with university or teacher training school while empowering them to be the funders of future scholarship recipients.
  36. SUPPLEMENTAL EDUCATIONENGLISH CLASSES A B O U T We foster students creativity and self-confidence through supplementary English classes. These programs also give students a competitive advantage when pursuing their dreams for the future.
  37. SUPPLEMENTAL EDUCATIONTRAVELING TEACHER SUPPORT A B O U T The focus of this initiative is to build the skills of 5th and 6th grade government teachers so they are better equipped to teach English in their government schools.
  38. SUPPLEMENTAL EDUCATIONENGINEERING CLUB A B O U T Over 30 students meet each week for about an hour, during which students work on a wide variety of projects in the field of engineering.
  39. SUPPLEMENTAL EDUCATIONBIKE-TO-SCHOOL PROGRAM A B O U T The Bike-to-School Program provides the opportunity for students to continue their education after 6th grade by offering them a bike to be able to attend their classes.
  40. SUPPLEMENTAL EDUCATIONTEACHER LIVELIHOODS A B O U T Government teachers in Cambodia get paid an average of 50 to 70 USD per month, a barely liveable wage for an individual, much less a family. Teacher Livelihoods provide supplemental income to dedicated teachers, so that they can focus on education.
  41. LITERACYCLASSROOM LIBRARIES A B O U T Classroom libraries focus on fostering a love of reading in students by increasing access to books and incorporating books into the classroom.
  42. LITERACYCLASSROOM LIBRARIES A C H I E V E M E N T S Over 50 classrooms in Chanleas Dai commune now offer Khmer reading material and children’s books.
  43. COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPSCHILD-TO-CHILD CLUBS A B O U T Child-to-Child clubs encourage children to identify issues they encounter on a regular basis, such as dengue fever or pollution, and then plan a course of action to work for change within their own neighborhoods.
  44. COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPSCHILD-TO-CHILD CLUBS A C H I E V E M E N T S Currently, there are 25 Child Clubs, and we have 8 educators to facilitate these clubs.
  45. COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPSCHILD-TO-CHILD CLUBS A C H I E V E M E N T S Currently, each village is constructing community centers to accommodate the growing child clubs. Every village has donated time, materials, and land to create a dedicated space.

  48. INDEPENDENT COMMUNITY PROJECTSVOLUNTEER COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT (VCD) A B O U T 20 graduating 9th grade students who live in Chanleas Dai commune decided to start their own organization to help their communities.
  49. INDEPENDENT COMMUNITY PROJECTSVOLUNTEER COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT (VCD) A B O U T They began teaching English to community members in seven villages as well as starting clean- up initiatives to alleviate the litter problem seen in many villages.
  50. INDEPENDENT COMMUNITY PROJECTSVOLUNTEER COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT (VCD) A C H I E V E M E N T S The results of their efforts have allowed these young people to teach 20 evening English classes per day in rural Cambodia.
