4.    Determine Traffic Pattern for that Competitor
5.    Determine Competitor’s Proven Profitability Point

STEP 1: Identify Your Single Most Important Keyword
Keyword Tool:

    1.   Sign into http://adwords.google.com
    2.   Open Reporting and Tools  Keyword Tool
    3.   Type in your Single Most Important Keyword
    4.   Check “Only show ideas closely related to my search terms”
    5.   Set your Location and Language according to your market
    6.   Click Search
    7.   Make sure Match Type is set to Broad
    8.   Organize Local Monthly Searches by volume
    9.   Choose the Highest Volume Keyword

STEP 2: Identify Keyword Search Volume Trend
Keyword Tool:

1. Go to http://www.google.com/insights/search/# or Click on the
   Magnifying Glass Icon         next to your Single Most Important
   Keyword in the Keyword Tool to access Google Insights for Search
   Trend Data for that keyword
2. Set filters to 2004-Present and match Location with your Keyword
   Tool location settings from STEP 1.
3. Keyword Search Volume Absolute Trend Assessment:
    a) Direction: Up, Down, or Flat?
    b) Cyclicality: Stable or Cyclical?
    c) Breakout pattern (Y/N)?
4. Add search term           “P90x”
5. Keyword Search Volume Relative Trend Assessment: (Note
   keyword trend pattern relative to comparison keyword “P90x”)

STEP 3: Identify Single Most Important PPC Competitor
Keyword Tool:

1. *IMPORTANT: Log Out of your Google Account (or open a fresh
   browser)
2. Go to http://www.google.com and type your Single Most
   Important Keyword into Google in “quotes”
3. Identify First PPC Competitor without a 1st Page Organic Listing
4. Answer the following questions:
    a) Is competitor split-testing PPC ads? (Hit Search multiple times)
    b) Is competitor capturing leads or selling something?
    c) Is competitor site focused around this niche specifically (i.e. not an
       Amazon.com or Ebay)
5. If YES to a, b, and c move on to STEP 4 (If not, move on to next PPC
   competitor and ask the same three questions)

STEP 4: Identify Traffic Pattern for that PPC Competitor
Keyword Tool:


1. Go to http://www.quantcast.com/
2. Type in your competitor’s root domain and Click Find
3. Set Range to ALL; Set Traffic to People per DAY
4. Look for Breakout Traffic Pattern
5. Compare Site Traffic Pattern (via Quantcast) vs. Keyword
   Search Volume Pattern (via Google Insights for Search)
6. Confirm competitor’s traffic pattern is Site-Specific (i.e. that
   your most important keyword isn’t showing a similar
   breakout pattern)
7. If Breakout Traffic Pattern IS site-specific, move to STEP 5

STEP 5: Identify Competitor’s Proven Profitability Point
Keyword Tool:


1. Go to the Way Back Machine at http://waybackmachine.org/
2. *IMPORTANT: Do NOT use the older version of the Way Back
   Machine at http://www.archive.org/ because the data is not
   as complete or up-to-date.
3. Type in your competitor’s root domain and Click SHOW ALL
4. Find the archived version of your competitor’s site
   immediately before and after the Breakout Traffic Point
   based on the estimated date of the Breakout Point according
   to Quantcast.
5. Identify the KEY CHANGES your competitor made to its site –
   paying close attention to headline, body copy, graphic choice,
   color, and layout.

Type in your Single Most Important Keyword 4. Check “Only show ideas closely related to my search terms” 5. Set your Location and Language according to your market 6. Click Search 7. Make sure Match Type is set to Broad 8. Organize Local Monthly Searches by volume 9. Go to http://www.google.com/insights/search/# or Click on the Magnifying Glass Icon next to your Single Most Important Keyword in the Keyword Tool to access Google Insights for Search Trend Data for that keyword 2. Set filters to 2004-Present and match Location with your Keyword Tool location settings from STEP 1. 3. Keyword Search Volume Absolute Trend Assessment: a) Direction: Up, Down, or Flat? b) Cyclicality: Stable or Cyclical? c) Breakout pattern (Y/N)? 4. Add search term “P90x” 5.   • 6. STEP 3: Identify Single Most Important PPC Competitor Keyword Tool: 1. *IMPORTANT: Log Out of your Google Account (or open a fresh browser) 2. Go to http://www.google.com and type your Single Most Important Keyword into Google in “quotes” 3. Identify First PPC Competitor without a 1st Page Organic Listing 4. Answer the following questions: a) Is competitor split-testing PPC ads? (Hit Search multiple times) b) Is competitor capturing leads or selling something? c) Is competitor site focused around this niche specifically (i.e. not an Amazon.com or Ebay) 5.   • 7. STEP 4: Identify Traffic Pattern for that PPC Competitor Keyword Tool: 1. Go to http://www.quantcast.com/ 2. Type in your competitor’s root domain and Click Find 3. Set Range to ALL; Set Traffic to People per DAY 4. Look for Breakout Traffic Pattern 5. Compare Site Traffic Pattern (via Quantcast) vs. Keyword Search Volume Pattern (via Google Insights for Search) 6. Confirm competitor’s traffic pattern is Site-Specific (i.e. that your most important keyword isn’t showing a similar breakout pattern) 7. Go to the Way Back Machine at http://waybackmachine.org/ 2. *IMPORTANT: Do NOT use the older version of the Way Back Machine at http://www.archive.org/ because the data is not as complete or up-to-date. 3. Type in your competitor’s root domain and Click SHOW ALL 4. Find the archived version of your competitor’s site immediately before and after the Breakout Traffic Point based on the estimated date of the Breakout Point according to Quantcast. 5.
