  10. 10. The state of scientific research in Finland 2012 Report by the Finnish Academy: “Publication numbers in Finnish science and research and citations to Finnish research publications are at a good level… Nonetheless, it is interesting to consider why Switzerland, for instance, continues to have such strong success: is there something about Swiss science and research funding or about university practices in Switzerland that could be imported and applied to Finland?” The development of relative citation impact in 2003–2010 in eight European countries. Pekka Olsbo, ELPUB 2013, Karlskrona13.6.2013
  11. 11. 13.6.2013 Pekka Olsbo, ELPUB 2013, Karlskrona - The Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland seem to be on their way up
  12. 12. 13.6.2013 Pekka Olsbo, ELPUB 2013, Karlskrona Universities among the best 300 7/2012 1/2013 Repositories among the best 100 1/2013 Universities among the best 300 in openness 7/2012 1/2013 Mean value of top 5 universities in openness rank 7/2012 1/2013 Median value of top 5 universities in openness rank 7/2012 1/2013 Austria 3 3 1 2 2 283 349 383 417 Denmark 4 3 2 2 4 244 215 308 175 Finland 2 1 2 2 3 323 188 346 168 Ireland 1 1 0 0 0 763 660 846 727 Netherlands 11 10 7 11 10 26 48 19 57 Norway 3 3 1 2 2 507 240 357 180 Sweden 8 7 2 7 7 116 102 133 98 Switzerland 5 5 3 5 3 146 225 125 273 Comparison of same 8 countries in RWU and RWR Same countries, Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland seem to be on their way up also in Openness and The Netherlands is keeping its very strong position.
  13. 13. Changes in top 500 in RWU Number of the Universities which gained a better ranking in RWU 1/2013 – 7/2012: Netherlands 7 Finland 4 Norway 3 Denmark 3 Sweden 3 Switzerland 2 Ireland 1 Austria 1 13.6.2013 Pekka Olsbo, ELPUB 2013, Karlskrona Almost all significant improvements in ranking happened in Openness indicator
  14. 14. Conclusions Openness does matter in Ranking Web of Universities. Many smaller countries gain their rankings because of their OA-policies. And e.g. Brazil almost only because of openness. No relationship between openness and relative citation impact can be made yet. - A longer time-scale for reliable results is needed. Is RWU methodology reliable? Big changes happened in six months. Too big? 13.6.2013 Pekka Olsbo, ELPUB 2013, Karlskrona
  15. 15. Conclusions In any case, Openness and the visibility of research in the Web in becoming more and more important for universities and it should be taken seriously: “In the second decade of the 21st century the Web is key for the future of all the university missions, as it is already the most important scholarly communication tool, the future channel for the off-campus distance learning, the open forum for the community engagement and the universal showcase for attracting talent, funding and resources.” (Ranking Web of Universities) 13.6.2013 Pekka Olsbo, ELPUB 2013, Karlskrona
