Social media and the ou

Published on

Here are the slides of a talk I first gave at the regional centre in gateshead on 11th May 2010. It is about the various ways that the Open University engages with social media, and some of the challenges that arise from this. Please feel free to get in touch with any comments or questions.

  • Make the point about the multiple channels Also make the point that I’m still fairly new, the audience probably knows plenty about the OU! But that the following is based on a book chapter I’ve co-written with linda wilkes Multiple channels to contact me reflects on how many channels there are in social media (for me, for OU for everybody)
  • Screenshot from Broadcast media unidirectional One to many Expensive to produce
  • Read/write web Prosumers (producers + consumers)
  • Perhaps ask a few questions at this point? Have they had a go at any of these? What are their experiences? Do they think that they OU should engage with these?
  • Perhaps click on link?!/theopenuniversity?ref=ts
  • Talk about podstars, “academic collateral damage”
  • What does the OU become if all it’s learning content is available for free?
