• 1. David: Shaping a Godly Heart You've Got to Have Heart
    • 2. These are some of the last words of David

David died at the end of our lesson two weeks ago

You'd expect to end a series on a life with the account of a death

There are things we haven't said yet

    • 3. Sermon will be brief

Preacher with new dentures preached 5 minutes

"I usually preach about 30 minutes, but this morning my dentures hurt"

Next Sunday went 1-1/2 hours

"I accidentally wore my wife's dentures"

    • 4. Summarize things about David we should remember

First things we hear about David do not come from Samuel - he hadn't met David - but from God

    • 5. In context of Saul's presumption at Gilgal

1 Samuel 13:13-14 NIV "You acted foolishly," Samuel said. "You have not kept the command the LORD your God gave you; if you had, he would have established your kingdom over Israel for all time.

    • 6. In context of Saul's presumption at Gilgal

(14) But now your kingdom will not endure; the LORD has sought out a man after his own heart and appointed him leader of his people, because you have not kept the Lord's command."

    • 7. In context of Saul's failure in regard to the Amalekites

1 Samuel 15:26-29 NIV But Samuel said to him, "I will not go back with you. You have rejected the word of the LORD, and the LORD has rejected you as king over Israel!"

    • 8. In context of Saul's failure in regard to the Amalekites

(27) As Samuel turned to leave, Saul caught hold of the hem of his robe, and it tore. (28) Samuel said to him, "The LORD has torn the kingdom of Israel from you today

    • 9. In context of Saul's failure in regard to the Amalekites

and has given it to one of your neighbors--to one better than you. (29) He who is the Glory of Israel does not lie or change his mind; for he is not a man, that he should change his mind."

    • 10. In the context of seeing Jesse's sons at Bethlehem

1 Samuel 16:1-13 NIV The LORD said to Samuel, "How long will you mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and be on your way;

    • 11. In the context of seeing Jesse's sons at Bethlehem

I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem. I have chosen one of his sons to be king." ... (3) Invite Jesse to the sacrifice … You are to anoint for me the one I indicate." ...

    • 12. In the context of seeing Jesse's sons at Bethlehem

(6) When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and thought, "Surely the Lord's anointed stands here before the LORD." (7) But the LORD said to Samuel,

    • 13. In the context of seeing Jesse's sons at Bethlehem

"Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.“ …

    • 14. In the context of seeing Jesse's sons at Bethlehem

(10) Jesse had seven of his sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel said to him, "The LORD has not chosen these." (11) So he asked Jesse, "Are these all the sons you have?"

    • 15. In the context of seeing Jesse's sons at Bethlehem

"There is still the youngest," Jesse answered, "but he is tending the sheep." Samuel said, "Send for him; we will not sit down until he arrives." (12) So he sent and had him brought in.

    • 16. In the context of seeing Jesse's sons at Bethlehem

He was ruddy, with a fine appearance and handsome features. Then the LORD said, "Rise and anoint him; he is the one."

    • 17. In the context of seeing Jesse's sons at Bethlehem

(13) So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the LORD came upon David in power. Samuel then went to Ramah.

    • 18. For all David's faults

There was something about David's heart that God liked

How did David live?

He lived with a mission

    • 19. Each time he met one goal, he reached for another

As a young man, his goal was to become king

Once he became king, his goal was to rid Israel of its enemies and bring peace

Once that was done, his goal was to build God's temple

    • 20. David lived and died looking forward

It is not important that you reach your goals

It is vitally important that you have goals

    • 21. He lived with passion

David had many moods

He was not like most of us

He couldn't just keep his cool

Whatever emotion David was feeling, he let you know it

    • 22. Emotional nature goes with creative genius

That was why David could write like he did

His pen pricked more hearts than his sword ever did

He built a kingdom around 1,000 BC, but his pen touches us today

    • 23. We all empathize with David

His brothers were jealous of him

His parents never thought he would amount to much

He had friends turn on him - and try to kill him

    • 24. We all empathize with David

He lived on the lam

The woman he loved stopped loving him

His daughter was raped

He had a baby die

His older sons died in rebellion

    • 25. We all empathize with David

One son ran him out of his home

His country took sides against him

His trusted friend stabbed him in the back

He had God say "No!" to his most heartfelt desire

    • 26. We all empathize with David

David was able to take what these experiences do to your heart and put them on paper

    • 27. He lived with vision

He didn't live thinking about his kingdom, but about Christ's kingdom

The apostles always pointed to David to legitimize Jesus

    • 30. Peter's sermon appealed to David's pen

(23) This man was handed over to you by God's set purpose and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put him to death by nailing him to the cross.
