  2. Sacraments of Service
    • There are two sacraments of service:
    • A. Holy Orders
    • B. Holy Matrimony
  3. Consacration
    • This word comes from the Latin.
    • It means:
    • A. To set aside for a holy purpose
    • Through this consecration or ordination the minister of God serves the Church by word and deed.
  4. Jesus the Son of God
    • Jesus is the perfect mediator
    • The perfect High priest
    • Through Jesus a new covenant is established.
    • A perfect sacrifice is offered
    • A new people is formed
    • A new covenant is created
  5. The Priest
    • The priest is ordained (incorporated) to act in the person of Christ.
    • The priest makes present Jesus’ ministry and actions through the ministerial priesthood
  6. The Priest
    • Through the ministerial priesthood the priest offers:
    • A. Prayers during the Liturgy
    • B. Represents Christ and the Church
    • C. Sanctify us
    • D. Offers the sacraments
    • E. Leads the community of faith.
  7. St. Thomas on the Priesthood
    • A. Only Christ is the true High Priest
    • B. All others are ministers of Christ
    • The priesthood in the O.T announces Christ.
    • The priesthood in the N.T acts in the person of Christ.
  8. Priesthood of believers
    • Like Christ we are anointed priest, prophet, and Kings
    • Through baptism we receive the priesthood of all believers.
  9. Priesthood of Believers
    • Prophet: To announce and to denounce
    • Priest: We have the ability to offer prayers and spiritual sacrifices to God, (holiness)
    • King: We share the promise of eternal life in the kingdom of heaven
  10. Priesthood of believers
    • Given to all who are baptized
    • We are all call:
    • A. to serve God and neighbor
    • B. To be witnesses
    • C. To live a holy life acceptable to God.
  11. Ministerial priesthood
    • Is at the service of the common priesthood of believers.
    • It sanctifies the people of God, through the sacraments, word and deeds
  12. Holy Orders
    • Jesus Chose Apostles (those who are sent)
    • To continue his ministry on earth
    • He gave them the power to act in his name.
  13. Holy Orders
    • The sacrament of mission through which Christ continues his presence through the ministry of the Bishop and priest.
    • This ministry is exercise until the end of time.
  14. There are three degrees or orders
    • Episcopate = Bishop
    • Presbyterate = Priest
    • Diaconate = Deacon
  15. Bishops
    • Episcopos = overseer
    • A. has the fullness of the priesthood
    • B. has the power to ordain, to teach, to rule
    • C. Successors of the Apostles
    • D. With the Pope guide the people of God to holiness, truth and the experience of God (Magisterium).
  16. Priest
    • Presbyter = elder
    • Priest are incorporated into the priesthood of Christ
    • A. They represent the bishop (subordinates)
    • B. They have the power to preach, and celebrate the sacraments and lead the people in worship.
  17. Deacons
    • There are two types
    • Transitional = those studying for the priesthood (celibate)
    • Permanent = Married or single Men who wish to serve the Church as ministers
    • Deacons do not share in the priesthood. They are ordain to ministry (service).
  18. Deacons
    • Some of the Deacon’s functions are:
    • Preach
    • Baptize
    • Proclaim the word of God
    • Witness marriage union
    • Lead funerals
    • Assist the Bishop or the priest in the liturgy
    • Serve as chaplains
  19. Sunday
    • The day of the Lord is the perfect day for the celebration of Holy Orders
    • The faithful is invited to participate at ordinations.
  20. Effects
    • Strength
    • Grace
    • INDELABLE MARK = to act in the person of Christ
