    • Globally, at least one out of every three women has been beaten, forced into sex or otherwise abused in her lifetime 4
    • 70% of murdered women around the world are killed by their partner 4

    • In Canada, 1 in 5 homicides involve the death of an intimate partner 2
    • Approximately 1 to 2 women every week are murdered by a partner or ex-partner in Canada 3

    • There were 10,273 incidents of spousal assault in BC during the year 2005 1
    • That is around 28 incidents EVERY day

      • Direct medical costs of violence against women in Canada amount to 1.5 billion CAD per year
      • This does not include costs incurred to the criminal justice system, social services, or loss of work time

      • Total cost of violence against women in the USA amounts to 5.8 billion USD per year
      • This includes costs from injuries, lost time at paid and unpaid work, and more

  • 15. Victims of VAW in 2008 in BC
    • A 17-year-old female was stabbed to death by her boyfriend on May 18, 2008, in Fort St. John, BC.
    • The young woman was suppose to graduate from Ross Sheppard High School one week after she was killed.

  • 16. Victims of VAW in 2008 in BC
    • A 78-year-old woman was doused in gas and set on fire on August 1, 2008, in Blackpool, BC. She suffered 2nd and 3rd degree burns on 40 to 50% of her body. Accused is a 51-year-old male.
    • Three children aged 10, 8, and 5 were found dead by their mother on April 6, 2008, in Merritt, BC. The suspect is their own father.

  • 17. Victims of VAW in 2008 in BC
    • A 28-year old mother and her 2-year old son were found dead on December 17, 2008, in Kelowna, BC. The mother’s boyfriend is being charged with second-degree murder in both cases.
    • A female died on June 6, 2008, in Abbotsford, BC, after being shot by her husband.

    • A 45-year-old mother and her 23-year-old daughter were shot by their husband/father on August 19, 2008, in Surrey, BC.
    • The mother died at the scene, while her daughter survived and was taken to a hospital.
    • The mother is also leaving behind her 12-year-old son.
