How Do You Recognize an
Redness or Warmth
Pain in the affected area
Increase in body temperature – chills
Changes in mental status, behavior and mood
Increase in amount, change in color or odor of drainage
Change in bowel movement or urine
Presence of pus
Changes or decrease in balance
Abnormal lab tests
Loss of function or movement of an affected body part
An infection acquired in a hospital or health
care facility. More specifically, an infection
that was not present or incubating prior to
the person’s admission.
