  • How did it all start ? August 16 th 1993 by Ian Murdock
    • Spirit of GNU and Linux
    • named after "debra"
    • version 1.1(June 1996) had 474 packages and has dpkg
    • 2.1(march 1999) included apt and had 2250 packages
    • Version
  • Typical GNU/Linux distro
    • Linux Kernel
    • Libraries and compilers like glibc,gcc,perl & python
    • Desktop Environments like KDE or GNOME or XFCE
    • Office suites and other applications
  • Debian project gets them together Ex: Kernel code:
    • kernel code is brought from kernel.org
    • A DD gets the code and compiles for his architecture
    • Submits it for review
    • If there are no bugs it enters unstable
    • Unstable is used by Ubuntu and Debian testing
    • Debian testing->Stable after extensive testing
  • Ubuntu !
    • 90 % from Debian unstable and 10 % of its own packages
    • The debian unstable packages are modified/patched to suit its tool chain versions
    • Ubuntu helps Debian testing with a huge no of use case testing on Desktop

    • bugs: report them!
    • Improvements: please file a bug !
    • Debian on local language: help achieve 100 % localised desktop
    • Coding: Squash bugs and package a new application into Debian
