    • 3. Widely used as in servers and desktops (ubuntu)
  • 4. How did it all start ? August 16 th 1993 by Ian Murdock
    • Spirit of GNU and Linux
    • 5. named after "debra"
    • 6. version 1.1(June 1996) had 474 packages and has dpkg
    • 7. 2.1(march 1999) included apt and had 2250 packages
    • 8. Version
  • 9. Typical GNU/Linux distro
    • Linux Kernel
    • 10. Libraries and compilers like glibc,gcc,perl & python
    • 11. Desktop Environments like KDE or GNOME or XFCE
    • 12. Office suites and other applications
  • 13. Debian project gets them together Ex: Kernel code:
    • kernel code is brought from kernel.org
    • 14. A DD gets the code and compiles for his architecture
    • 15. Submits it for review
    • 16. If there are no bugs it enters unstable
    • 17. Unstable is used by Ubuntu and Debian testing
    • 18. Debian testing->Stable after extensive testing
  • 19. Ubuntu !
    • 90 % from Debian unstable and 10 % of its own packages
    • 20. The debian unstable packages are modified/patched to suit its tool chain versions
    • 21. Ubuntu helps Debian testing with a huge no of use case testing on Desktop
