BigMove Press release No.5 2013
11 April, 2013
BigMove – 360° Heavy Haulage.
200 tow trucks and 430 special trailers were the beginning of the heavy goods transport
cooperative BigMove in the founding year 2003, when eleven medium-sized companies with
a cumulative market experience of 440 years and 3 billion road kilometres got together. The
intention was to bundle these values in an extensive system – for the benefit of the
customers and to increase their own efficiency. It soon became apparent that for best
possible results industry-specific planning and actions were essential. One of the prime
industry sectors for BigMove was, and still is the construction sector. For the complex
requirements of this industry operations could be optimized by providing a kit system made
up of specific trailers.
This system today makes up of almost 50% of the BigMove fleet. It reflects the requirements
repeatedly and frequently made on heavy goods transports all around large-scale
construction sites. In the past nine years this led to the development of the BigMove fleet
trailers “Chamäleon”, “Traumschiff”, “Samson” and “Popeye” in collaboration with reputable
manufacturers such as Scheuerle and Meusburger. The combinations of tractors and trailers
consider the technical requirements in respect of safety and handling of the special goods,
and on the other they are adapted to the complicated road permit situation for special
transports. Making the vehicles available all over Germany and Austria by deploying them at
11 locations the overall efficiency was jointly enhanced.
1
2. One example is the “Chamäleon”, which can carry up to 80 tons, but a permanent road
permit for empty runs without an additional accompanying vehicle was obtained, because the
empty weight of the tractor and the trailer together do not exceed 41.8 tons and the
combination complies with the legally required cornering characteristics.
The BigMove member companies were able to combine, through this system, fleet trailers
independent of the respective location and thereby act on the whole more efficiently and at
shorter notice. Currently vehicle locations are exchanged between the member companies
online and in real time so that the joint capacities are available for disposition and planning,
and not just those of a single company. As a result, the utilization and efficiency are
significantly increased – and the only thing reduced is the fuel consumption and the CO2
footprint.
Not only construction machinery but also indivisible loads such as beams for hall cranes
measuring 32 m in length can be transported within this kit system, so that large scale
construction sites can be extensively served.
The system does have its limitations in the heavy goods sector in some cases, because not
all eventualities can be reflected.
But even in these cases BigMove provides a constructive solution: “Each one of us has
extensive experience in the respective region, and based on the long-standing experience
and personal contacts in the specific international relations we can reliably realize complex
special solutions. So we have an efficient standardized system which meets requirements
out of the ordinary due to the intensive networking in the group”, says Markus Geser, CEO of
Geser Spedition and BigMove board member.
