  • Twitter could be described as a virtual coffee shop because it is constantly buzzing with chatter, with people coming and going (after they’ve got their daily fix of celebrity gossip, news, yadayada). Most importantly, Twitter is a fantastic social networking tool, especially for academics. It is a tool for building and interacting with social communities.
  • Why should we use Twitter in academia? Twitter is a vast knowledge network. It allows you to interact beyond the classroom. Twitter is omnipresent in our smartphones and laptops so we can interact anywhere and at anytime. Twitter provides you with new opportunities for connecting with other learning communities outside of your academic institute. With Twitter, you have to brief and to-the-point so it facilitates rapid broadcasting and consumption of information. So it’s very suitable for people with short attention spans or people who want to speed read vast amounts of information.
  • The ‘at’ sign is used to mention another Twitter account (e.g. @pauldoshea). Within a tweet, it becomes a link to that user’s profile. The hash (or pound) symbol is used to highlight keywords, topics, events, and emotions in a tweet. Using the hashtag turns the word or phrase into a link that allow you to see other tweets containing the same tag.The carte/hat sign is used to denote a tweet that is composed and sent by an individual on behalf of a group account used by multiple people (e.g. ^POS).#FF for endorsing other twitter users and suggesting for other people to follow them.HT is for acknowledging someone who’s shared content you are tweeting. PRT can also mean “Please retweet”
  • Hashtagsemphasise a word, classify a tweet to a particular subject, and make it easily searchable. Hashtags identify your tweets with the topic/subject you are tweeting about. In other words, hashtags help organize, structure and gather things together on Twitter. There is no set place for putting hash tags, but hash tags are usually placed at the end of tweets in order to enhance readability.You can integrate hash tags into your tweets to save space and it won’t affect readability. Retweets are Twitter’s trade currency. A retweet is a ‘vote-of-confidence’ because that person is rebroadcasting your tweet to their own social community. Not only will a retweet re-broadcast your message but it will also propagate your Twitter-handle beyond your own social community so you can get ‘discovered’ by new potential followers. Try not to use your full 140 characters for your tweet. When others retweet you, they need space to “RT @yourhandle” to your original tweet. So, bare in mind the amount of characters for your handle and deduct this from 140.  
  • Give credit to others by including their Twitter handle. If you don’t like the format of the tweet you are tweeting then you can use ‘MT’ (modified tweet) instead of ‘RT’.A retweet with modified content. If you want to include a comment in the retweet:[insert comment] RT @[twitterhandle]
  • A lot of people neglect this, but it is crucial that you interact with your followers on Twitter. Interaction with other academics so that you can build a social community. So don’t just broadcast by tweeting all the time. Respond to other people’s tweets, even if it is just a simple, “Thank you for sharing this!”. It’s common sense advice but many people don’t bother to do it.Don’t be noisy on Twitter. I’m a bit hypocritical about this because I am noisy on twitter. I sent 215 tweets at the DH Summer School in Bern, Switzerland. Compulsive tweeters that tweet continuously loose followers quickly. Spread your tweet out over time. Don’t over do the amount of tweets you are broadcasting. It’s all about quality and not quantity. Tweet important tweets at peak times. Between 8-10am are the most fertile times on Twitter because its when people arrive in their offices. Be conscious of time zones. Weekends have low twitter traffic!
