PROJECT BRIEF Create an instructive model for creative collaboration spaces. Incorporating at least: a conceptual space layout and communication strategy. Additionally provide examples of creative projects which can be held within the centre. The overall aim of this model should be to guide potential space-owner and point out key-issues. 1

PEOPLE AND IDEAS Incontro is Italian for meeting which is the goal of this model. To stimulate people and ideas to meet. 12

A PACKAGE This model provides a full package for anyone who wants to start a creative collaboration space. 13

RATIONALE Incontro enables different stakeholders to work together. Which in the current office landscape is almost impossible. Incontro fuses these groups: - Creative professionals - Companies - Consumers 14

COMMUNICATION, SPACE AND PROJECTS The success of a collaboration space is measured by the amount of creative collaborations it stimulates. The model consists of: – Concept – Space – Projects 15

CONCEPT Where does the centre stand for? What are its values? Is it about media-arts, technology, or knitting? This is defined in a concept. A concept you communicate (web/print/etc.) 16

SPACE A conceptual space is given in which several zones and its specific function are explained. All zones together construct a delicate balance of creative collaboration spaces. 17

PROJECTS To spark collaborations participative projects are mandatory. Outside parties can propose as well as participate in projects. This will be illustrated with the following projects: – Independent filmer Jane – MTV Netherlands 18

CONCEPT Each creative collaboration space requires its own concept. With a concept you give meaning; the space and projects support it. Meaning is given by a mission and values. 24

GENIUS LOCI The most important item for the space is to define a spirit of place. This is not only the architecture but more so the activities being performed in the centre. Just like the ‘smell of food’ any visitor should taste the ‘spirit of place’ when he or she visits the centre. 33

ZONES Incontro defines several zones: 1. Open Table 2. Lounge + bar 3. Work floor 4. Meeting rooms 5. Studio’s 6. Auditorium 36

OPEN TABLE The open-table is a temporary and informal desk. Visitors can sit at the table and work there. Basic facilities are freely offered by the centre. 37

OPEN TABLE The open table is a low-barrier entrance to the centre. People passing-by should directly see this table and the people working on it. It has iconic value of what creative collaborations. 38

OPEN TABLE To stimulate networking between the people present at the table a platform-function should be added to the table. Example : Who-are-you-pedestal? A small physical object on the table where each table visitor can leave his ‘trademark’. For some this is an ordinary business card for some other this can be a piece of fabric. The who-are-you-pedestal should facilitate all of these expressions. 39

BAR/LOUNGE Also a bar or lounge acts as low-barrier entrance to a centre. It furthermore stimulates spontaneous encounters and enables informal meetings. 41

BAR/LOUNGE Within a bar visitors can relax, meet friends, and have a drink. The bar can range from self- serviced or more professional with waiters and kitchen. Many visitors perhaps aren’t even aware of the role of creative collaboration space. With a bar giving it a partial public function visitors can enter, observe and be inspired by the centre. 42

PROJECTS > MTV NLD Mtv rents the space of a week and launches a co- creation event. Students or children can participate in a contest where they produce their own video clips. Creative professionals assist participants in production and presentation. The ideas however originate from the children. 64
