JOB SUMMARYThis is an innovative research post for a nurse with experience in luminal gastroenterology to assess,investigate and manage patients with gastrointestinal symptoms which persist after treatment forcancer, particularly those with radiation-induced injury and to run and develop studies which willassess the benefit of nurse-lead interventions in these patients. The post-holder will receiveappropriate training in post and ongoing support both at the Royal Marsden Hospital and at St. Mark’sHospital. KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY3.1 Research (Clinical Research Co-ordination)3.1.1 To assist in the running of this and other clinical trials and research undertaken in the unit, maintaining an accurate account of the status of the projects.3.1.2 To assist with the organisation and implementation of clinical trials, and liaising closely with the multi-disciplinary team to facilitate a co-ordinated approach to patient care.3.1.3 To ensure that proposed research projects for which the post-holder has responsibility are registered and reviewed by the Trust’s R & D department and Research Ethics Committee (REC) prior to commencement and that updates and amendments are reported in a timely fashion.3.1.43.1.5 To liaise with the multidisciplinary team to promote and oversee the appropriate referral and recruitment of patients to research trials within the unit for which the post holder has a designated responsibility.3.1.6 To ensure that all ICH GCP required documentation is kept in a clearly trackable system and is stored in an appropriate manner for the appropriate length of time.3.1.7 To establish and maintain good channels of communication within the research team, with other departments within the Trust and with other relevant organisations including non-commercial bodies and pharmaceutical sponsors.3.1.8 To safeguard the integrity of the trial by ensuring compliance with ICH GCP guidelines.3.1.9 To be able to work unsupervised in all areas of practice related to clinical research trials.3.1.10 To co-ordinate arrangements required for patients undergoing specialist investigations as part of the research protocol.JD – Research Nurse Band 7 Gastroenterology April 2007 2
  3. 3. 3.1.11 To assess the patient prior to trial treatment, monitor the patient receiving trial treatment and follow the patient up on completion of trial treatment as required by the protocol.3.1.12 To collect and accurately record data in accordance with the requirements of the trial protocol.3.1.13 To take part in other research studies as appropriate.3.1.14 To disseminate research data by preparing and presenting posters or research papers for presentation at meetings, conferences and publication.3.1.15 To participate in the design and preparation of research protocols, patient information sheets and other documentation associated with clinical trials, ensuring that these are reviewed and updated as required.3.1.16 To contribute to the development of clinical and research policies and procedures and to monitor and review them.3.1.173.1.13.1.2 • • • •3.2 Clinical3.2.1 To provide advice, information and education to patients/volunteers with regard to their participation in clinical research in order to facilitate effective informed consent, ensuring the patient (or where appropriate the parent/ guardian or next of kin) fully understands the nature of the clinical trial, of voluntary entry to the clinical trial and freedom to withdraw at any time without prejudice to treatment.3.2.2 To act as a support for patients and relatives throughout the trial, providing information as well as physical, spiritual and emotional support where necessary, and referring to other healthcare professionals where appropriate.3.2.3 To monitor patients appropriately who are taking part in the clinical trial(s).3.2.4 To establish and maintain good working relationships with supporting clinical services.3.2.5 To monitor treatment toxicity and/or side effects and to take appropriate action to reduce the effects of treatment as necessary.JD – Research Nurse Band 7 Gastroenterology April 2007 3
  4. 4. 3.2.6 To report and record any adverse events and serious adverse events that occur whilst the patient is being treated on a clinical trial.3.2.7 To work effectively as part of the multidisciplinary team and to contribute to the ongoing development of the clinical unit by acting as a role model for staff in areas related to clinical trials.3.2.8 To ensure the safe administration of all treatments and drugs that are given within the context of a clinical trial.3.2.9 To work within the NMC Code of Conduct and within your individual scope of professional conduct.3.2.10 To inform the principal investigator of any changes that would affect patient care or have implications on resources.3.2.11 To attend out-patients clinics, ward rounds and meetings as required in order to facilitate patient care and maintenance of trials.3.2.12 To set up a nurse led clinic in order to support and educate new and follow-up patients in the trial who have experienced radiation induced problems with the support of the Senior Clinician/Principle Investigator3.1.33.1.43.1.53.1.63.3 Management • •3.3.13.3.2 To take responsibility for the management of the band 6 research nurse in the gastroenterology research team and to act as a resource to ensure that they optimise their clinical research skills and potential.3.3.3 To work closely with the Senior Nurse, Clinical Trials to ensure that best practice is achieved.3.3.4 To be responsible for the co-ordination of annual and all other leave for the band 6 research nurse in the research team, ensuring minimal disruption to the service provided by this team to patients and the wider Directorate.3.3.5•JD – Research Nurse Band 7 Gastroenterology April 2007 4
