Who Should not participate in laughter session?• 1. Any person who feels any discomfort in any part of the body, must get himself examined by a doctor and work out his physical fitness status before joining the laughter session.• 2. A mild heaviness in the head after a laughter session in the beginning, is normal. Such individuals must not overexert and laugh forcefully. If you are already a hypertensive patient, get your blood pressure checked at least once in ten days. Don’t participate in laughter sessions if your blood pressure is high and uncontrolled. However, those taking treatment and keeping blood pressure within normal limits can join the sessions.
Who Should not participate in laughter session?• 3. Any heart patient on treatment, or one who has had heart attack in the past must get clearance from his cardiologist before joining laughter sessions. Those with a history of heart attacks and those who have had bypass operations done, may join the session if their treadmill (stress test) results are within normal limits. . 4. Recent Surgery: To be on the safe side, one should not join a laughter session, within three months of any major operation, especially on the abdomen. In the later case, one must get clearence from one’s surgeon.
Who Should not participate in laughter session?• 5. Pregnancy: In a small percentage of pregnant women, there is a possibility of abortion if there is a repeated rise in intra- abdominal pressure and they should avoid laughter sessions. If they wish to participate they must consult their specialist.• 6. Person suffering from Hernia,Advanced Piles (Haemorrhoids), attacks of Cold and Flu, Eye Complications should not participate in laughter session.
Basic Guidelines for a Laughter Session:1. All the participants will start laughing at the sametime when the anchor person gives the com mand1,2...start.2. People should not stand far away from each other.To laugh without jokes, eye contact is the key. Duringeach type of laughter a person must maintain good eyecontact with more than one of his neighbours.3. Do not apply too much force while laughing, it shouldbe more of a feeling and enjoying of the process.
4. One should try to feel free like a child and make funny gestures to make others laugh 5. One bout of laughter lasts for 30 seconds to 45 seconds. After each bout of laughter, or sometimes after two bouts, two deep breaths are taken, in order to give a break. This avoids exertion and tiredness. Sometimes, various neck, shoulder and arm stretching exercises are done in place of deep breathing between bouts of laughters.
New Model of Laughter Therapy SessionA typical laughter session is a perfect blend ofvarious stimulated laughter techniques interspersedwith breathing and stretching exercises. A 20-30minutes of laughter session can be divided intofollowing parts:Deep Breathing (Tadasan) : Yogic breathingtechniques help us to bring both physical and mentalrelaxation.This exercise need to be performed in between anytwo laughter yoga exercise.
The session starts when one takes a deep breath throughthe nostrils, simultaneously raising the arms up towardsthe sky, the breathing in should be rhythmic, inaccordance with movement of the arms and one shouldkeep on filling air into the lungs, as much as possible, andthen hold ones breath for 4 seconds. Then the breath isreleased slowly and rhythmically by bringing the stretchedarms back to normal position. One can breathe outthrough the nose or preferably through the mouth bypursing the lips, as if whistling silently. This is inaccordance with yogic deep breathing (a type ofparanayama) where the duration of exhalation isprolonged almost double the time of inhalation.
Following Types of Laughter YogaExercise can be practiced. 1) Warm UpLaughter/ Ho-Ho Ha-Ha Exercise: Thesession starts with warm up ho ho ha haexercise. All the members start chanting Ho-HoHa-Ha in unison, with rhythmic clapping 1-2, 1-2-3. (Ho-Ho; Ha-Ha-Ha). The sound should comefrom the naval, so as to feel the movement ofabdominal muscles, while keep the mouth halfopen. While chanting Ho-Ho Ha-Ha, a smileshould be maintained and one should keepmoving and meeting different people with goodeye contact. Good ground movement andenthusiastic clapping will help to build up goodenergy levels (philosophy of motion createsemotion).
2) Hearty Vigorous Laughter / PatialaLaughter / Lankesh Laughter / GabbarSingh Laughter :Here members open their mouth widelyand laugh heartily and vigorouslymoving their hands as well as slappingeach other’s hand.
•3) Silent ‘Joker’s Laughter : In this type oflaughter, the mouth is opened as wide as possible andparticipants laugh looking at each others’ faces andmaking different gestures showing their palms to eachother, shaking their heads and sometimes their hands.Silent Laughter should be done with quick movementsof the abdominal muscles as we do duringspontaneous laughter. It should not be like a prolongedhissing sound, which looks more artificial. Important:One should not apply excess force or over exert whilelaughing without sound. It can be harmful if intra-abdominal pressure is raised unnecessarily. Oneshould try to impart more feeling rather than applyingtoo much force
• 4) Office Laughter / Pigeon Laughter /HummingLaughter With Lips Closed: In this type of laughter,the lips are closed and a person tries to laugh whilemaking a humming sound which resonates throughoutthe skull. People can keep on looking at each other,making some gestures to stimulate each other or shakehands with each others or any other kind playfulnesscan be brought during the laughter. Some people alsocall it pigeon laughter. Caution: One should not try tolaugh without sound while keeping the mouth closedwith force. This raises undue pressure in theabdominal cavity that may be harmful.
•5) Lion Laughter: This particular laughter hasbeen derived from a yogic posture known asSimha Mudra (Lion Posture). In the lion posture,stick your tongue out fully while keeping themouth wide open. With eyes wide open stretchyour hands like the paws of a lion and roar like alion followed by laughter coming from yourbelly. Lion Laughter gives very good exercise tofacial muscles, the tongue and throat. It removesinhibitions and good for the immunity of throat.It is also improves blood supply to the thyroidgland.
•6) Cell Phone Laughter: This is also known asmobile phone laughter. It is very amusing and playful.The participants will hold imaginary mobile phone tryto laugh making different gestures and moving aroundin the group to meet different people and laugh as ifthey are enjoying the laughter. Mobile phone laughtercan also be done in two groups facing each other andat the command of anchor person both the group willcross each other while laughing and holding themobile phone. If required the two groups can crossover again to come back to the original position.While crossing the member must look at each otherand laugh. .
•7) Swinging Laughter / Rolly Polly Laughter: Thisis an interesting kind laughter as it has a lot ofplayfulness. All the member move outwards by twometers to widen the circle. On instruction from theanchor person people move forward by making aprolonged sound of Ae Ae- Aeeeee....., simultaneouslyraising the hands and they all burst into laughter whilemeeting in the center and waving their hands. Afterthe bout of laughter, they move back to their originalposition. The second time they move forward bysaying Oh- Ooooooo.. and burst into laughter.Similarly, the third and fourth times they make thesounds of Eh- Eh... E.... and Oh- Oh... O... Manypeople are seen behaving like children and enjoyingthe fun.
8) Heart to Heart Laughter (IntimacyLaughter): This laughter should be donelast of all and here the participants comecloser and hold each others hands andlaugh with compassionate eye contact. Onecan shake hands, hug each other whilelaughing if convenient. This is also knownas intimacy laughter. In conservativecommunities ladies and gents can do inseparate groups.
