  1. 1. Free Gifts!Discovering Your God-Given Spiritual GiftsPr. Becca Ehrlich
  2. 2. OK, so who are you??• Pastor at Zion Lutheran Church in Frewsburg, NY• Was pastoral staff leader for Participation (amongother ministry areas) at Prince of Peace, CliftonPark during Internship and afterwards• Spiritual Gifts Assessment and matchingministries at two different congregations
  3. 3. So…..Before We Begin…• Why are you here?• What have you heard about spiritual gifts before?• Have you taken a spiritual gifts assessmentbefore? If so, what was it like? If not, how do youfeel about taking one today?• Are there any spiritual gifts that you’ve heard ofbefore that have you puzzled?
  4. 4. What are Spiritual Gifts???• Spiritual gifts are special abilities given by theHoly Spirit, to each member of the body of Christ,in order to fulfill the mission of the Church.• Two major Greek words used in Scripture• Charismata (charis= grace)• Pneumatika (pneuma= spirit)
  5. 5. So What?• Knowing what gifts you’ve been given by God willhelp you better serve God, fulfilling our baptismalcalling (stewardship)• Knowing your spiritual gifts will affect whatministries in and out of Church you will be bestsuited for, and what you will want to get involved in• Knowing your spiritual gifts will stave off burn-out,i.e. spending time and energy on ministries that youdon’t have the gifts for
  6. 6. What’s the Bible Say About This?• There are 3-4 Bible passages that directly deal withspiritual gifts by describing and listing some ofthem:-Romans 12:4-8-1 Corinthians 12: 1-11; 27-30-Ephesians 4:11-13-[1 Peter 4: 10-11]• These lists are no in way exhaustive; other gifts aredescribed in other places in the Bible• Let’s look at these spiritual gifts passages!
  7. 7. Romans 12:4-8• 4 For as in one body we have many members, and not all themembers have the same function, 5 so we, who are many, areone body in Christ, and individually we are members one ofanother. 6 We have gifts that differ according to the gracegiven to us: prophecy, in proportion to faith; 7 ministry, inministering; the teacher, in teaching; 8 the exhorter, inexhortation; the giver, in generosity; the leader, in diligence;the compassionate, in cheerfulness.
  8. 8. Romans 12:4-8Gifts listed:• Prophecy• Serving• Teaching• Exhortation• Giving• Leadership• Mercy
  9. 9. 1 Corinthians 12: 1-11; 27-30• Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to beuninformed. 2 You know that when you were pagans, you were enticed andled astray to idols that could not speak. 3 Therefore I want you tounderstand that no one speaking by the Spirit of God ever says “Let Jesusbe cursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except by the Holy Spirit.• 4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; 5 and there arevarieties of services, but the same Lord; 6 and there are varieties ofactivities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. 7 Toeach is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 8 To oneis given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another theutterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, 9 to another faith bythe same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 to anotherthe working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the discernment ofspirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation oftongues. 11 All these are activated by one and the same Spirit, who allots toeach one individually just as the Spirit chooses.
  10. 10. 1 Corinthians 12: 1-11; 27-30 (con’t)27 Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it.28 And God has appointed in the church first apostles, secondprophets, third teachers; then deeds of power, then gifts ofhealing, forms of assistance, forms of leadership, various kindsof tongues. 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are allteachers? Do all work miracles? 30 Do all possess gifts ofhealing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret?
  11. 11. 1 Corinthians 12: 1-11; 27-30Gifts Listed:• Wisdom• Knowledge• Faith• Healing• Miracles• Prophecy• Discernment• Tongues• Interpretation of tongues• **** Not being uninformed about spiritual gifts• ****Not everyone has the same gifts!! (“Are all prophets??...”)
  12. 12. Ephesians 4:11-1311 The gifts he gave were that some would be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors andteachers, 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, 13 until all of us cometo the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Sonof God, to maturity, to the measure of the full stature ofChrist.

  14. 14. [1 Peter 4: 10-11]10 Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve oneanother with whatever gift each of you has received.11 Whoever speaks must do so as one speaking the very wordsof God; whoever serves must do so with the strength that Godsupplies, so that God may be glorified in all things throughJesus Christ. To him belong the glory and the power foreverand ever. Amen.
  15. 15. [1 Peter 4: 10-11]• A bit different than the other passages• No specific spiritual gifts listed, instead sayingeach of us should use the gifts given to us…• When speaking and serving we should bespeaking and doing the work of God
  16. 16. 17. 17. How is a spiritual gift assessment differentfrom a “Time and Talents” sheet?• Time and Talents sheets ask people to checkoff gifts they think they have so that ministryleaders can plug them in• Spiritual gift assessments actually find outwhat gifts each person actually has and thenboth the person and ministry leaders can worktogether to figure out where the person canbest use his/her gifts, both in life and in theChurch
