History Of Kannur
• Kannur is an important port on the Arabian Sea
• Carried out trade with Persia and Arabia in the
twelfth and thirteenth centuries.
• The British conquered it in 1790 and transformed
it into one of their major military stations on the
Malabar Coast.
• During British rule in India, Kannur
was known by its Anglicised name of
Cannanore, which is still in fairly
common usage.
• Kannur town — this is the actual city
of Kannur and the administrative
headquarters of Kannur District.
• Kannur City — Kannur City was the
ancient capital of the Arakkal kingdom.

• Important city in North Malabar region on Kerala
• Has traditional, economical importance
• Popularly known as the land of LOOMS AND
LORES
• Famous for pristine beaches, its native
performing art THEYYAM and its handloom
industry
• Houses one of the biggest military cantonments
in the country

SCENARIO OF BANK ROAD FROM MONDAY TO
SATURDAY
As Kannur market is open on all days except SUNDAY, the roads are
usually busy all the time . Most traffic is found between
1 p.m. – 6 p.m.
SCENARIO OF BANK ROAD ON SUNDAY
Kannur market is closed on Sunday ,so complete silence remains on
the road . Very less traffic is observed on this day and that too in the
afternoon time.
BANK ROAD
• It’s occupied mostly by jewellery shops with MALABAR
GOLD being the most eminent among them.
• There are four banks.
• It also consists of garment shops and some small stalls for
eating.
• These shops are dwarfed by the presence of electronic
shop named NIKSHAN ELECTRONICS which is the best shop
for electronic items in kannur.
• Bank road has a lot of ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE due to the
presence of largest stores in the city namely MALABAR
GOLD and NIKSHAN ELECTRONICS.

• Deals in gold jewellery, diamond jewellery and watches
• Takes part in charity programs and has various funding
schemes
• During our field study the rate of gold varied from Rs. 1400-
1440 per gram.
• There is a separate playing section for children.

• It’s the largest and most eminent electronic shop in
Kannur.
•Established in the year 1996
• Only one branch in Kannur
• Is a big shop with 3 storey
• Deals in LCD TVs, COLOR TVs, PLASMA TVs,
REFRIGERATORS, MICROWAVE OVEN, CELL PHONES,
HANDICAMS, WASHING MACHINES, CHIMNEY, LAPTOPS,
ACs etc
• Has won many awards for the good work
• It provides cooking classes

3. CORPORATION BANK
4. KARNATAKA BANK
• The bank is 112 years old
• Provides all types of bank accounts like savings,
current, demat, equity, fixed etc
• Provides house loan, vehicle loan, personal
loan, study loan and business loan
• Facilities offered to NRIs
• Technological services like internet banking
and mobile banking available

• Has a collection of books and novels on almost
every topic
• Books are issued on the basis of a membership
card
COMMERCIAL ASPECTS
• Around 62 shops are there on Bank Road
• Most of the shops are large-scale shops
• Kannur is famous for TEXTILE IN HANDLOOM
INDUSTRY, that is why it’s called a city of
LOOMS and LORES.
CULTURAL ASPECTS
• Theyyam is the native performing art of Kannur
• DTPC ( District Tourism Promotional Council)
organizes many cultural events to promote the
tourism of Kannur as such programmes attract
the tourists as it’s the showcase of the culture of
Kannur.
• People of kannur are very traditional, most of
them wear traditional clothes,i.e. men wear lungi
and women wear kerala sarees with lots of gold
ornaments.
LEARNING EXPERIENCE
We gained a lot while doing FIELD STUDIES. We learnt :
• to communicate well with STRANGERS
• to get our work done by influencing people
• how to work in a team
• how to develop leadership quality
• to co-ordinate in a group
• to maintain our patience level while dealing with shop
owners
• the basic idea behind the functioning of a shop
