HUFFINGTONPOST - The British National Partyscandidate for mayor of Liverpool has been arrested onsuspicion faking signatures on his nomination papers. Mike Whitby, who is on Thursdays ballot paper for thedirectly-elected post, was held by police at his home in northWales on Monday. Detectives arrived at the house at 7.30am but the candidaterefused to co-operate and officer were unable to detain himuntil around six hours later, the Press Association reported.

Merseyside Police said he remains in custody beingquestioned over alleged electoral fraud by makingfalse statements and faking signatures on nominationelection papers. Detective Superintendent Martin Andrew, ofMerseyside Police, said: "Following an allegation thatnomination forms for the mayoral elections hadbeen fraudulently filled in, a police investigation waslaunched. "Officers conducted extensive inquiries in theWavertree area of Liverpool over the weekend andinterviewed a significant number of people.

"Following those inquiries and after taking advicefrom the Crown Prosecution Service, Merseysidepolice officers attended an address in the Wrexhamarea of North Wales at 7.30am today to speak to thehomeowner about the allegations. "My officers made repeated attempts to speak to theoccupant and, at around 1.30pm today, theyarrested a 59-year-old man on suspicion of makingfalse statements and faking signatures on nominationelection papers - an offence under Section 65A ofthe Representation of the People Act.

"The man was taken to a police station in Wrexhamwhere he was interviewed about the allegations. "He currently remains in police custody." The complaint was made to Merseyside Police followingan investigation by the Liverpool Echo which reportedalleged irregularities in Mr Whitbys nomination papers. A BNP spokesman said Whitby denies the allegationsand stands by the names on his nomination form.

He added: "Mike and his wife went to every single one ofthose people and explained who he was and what he standsfor. "What we have here is a newspaper trying to scupper anelection campaign." There are a total of 12 candidates for mayor in Liverpool thisThursday, including Labour leader Joe Anderson and LiberalDemocrat Richard Kemp. Tony Caldeira is the Conservative candidate. Steve Radfordfrom the Liberal Party and John Coyne for the Green Partyare also standing.
