    2. 2. INTRODUCTION TO ANGER <ul><li>What is it? </li></ul><ul><li>Anger is an emotion. </li></ul><ul><li>It is a potentially healthy emotion. </li></ul><ul><li>It motivates us to change. </li></ul><ul><li>It communicates to others that something isn’t right </li></ul>
    3. 3. ANGER <ul><li>There are many different types of anger and today we will look at some of them </li></ul><ul><li>We will look at learning to accept our anger and how to deal with it in a healthy way </li></ul>
    4. 4. AGGRESSIVE ANGER <ul><li>Acting out our anger </li></ul><ul><li>Shouting </li></ul><ul><li>Hitting People </li></ul><ul><li>Wrecking the place </li></ul><ul><li>Bullying </li></ul><ul><li>How many times have we kicked a car or broken a mirror off a car because we were angry </li></ul>

PASSIVE ANGER <ul><li>Blaming others for our addiction </li></ul><ul><li>Avoiding eye contact </li></ul><ul><li>Walking out </li></ul><ul><li>Putting other people down </li></ul><ul><li>Stop talking to people (parents/family) </li></ul><ul><li>How many of you can identify with any of these? </li></ul>
    6. 6. VENGEANCE <ul><li>Who understands the word Vengeance? </li></ul><ul><li>Vengeance is refusing to forgive and forget , and bringing up hurtful things from the past in order to feel better about you </li></ul>
    7. 7. So what are the symptom’s of anger <ul><li>Isolation: Avoiding people we feel have upset or angered us </li></ul><ul><li>Irritability: Snapping at others who have done nothing </li></ul><ul><li>Weight problems: This can result from feeling vulnerable </li></ul><ul><li>Guilt: This comes from acting in a way that I wouldn’t normally do </li></ul><ul><li>Anger is made worse by the affects of our active addictions i.e. Alcohol, drugs etc. </li></ul>

What are some of the affects of these types of Anger? <ul><li>Lose out on relationships </li></ul><ul><li>Spend our time fighting with family/friends </li></ul><ul><li>Don’t like being told what to do </li></ul><ul><li>We shout and roar and walk out </li></ul><ul><li>We bully those weaker i.e. younger siblings </li></ul>
    9. 9. There is one important point to remember <ul><li>Anger is also a positive emotion . It keeps us safe in dangerous or unsafe situations such as fights, muggings etc </li></ul><ul><li>Can anyone give me another example of where anger can be positive ? </li></ul>
    10. 10. ANGER CONTROL <ul><li>Understand what makes you angry </li></ul><ul><li>Become aware of your feelings </li></ul><ul><li>Could you handle it differently? </li></ul><ul><li>Be honest with yourself </li></ul><ul><li>Set yourself goals </li></ul><ul><li>Apply the serenity prayer </li></ul>
    11. 11. ANGER <ul><li>What can you change (my behaviour )? </li></ul><ul><li>What do you have to accept (others behaviour)? </li></ul><ul><li>Make a list of what will help you reach your goals. </li></ul>

SUMMARY <ul><li>Today we looked at the affect of anger in our lives </li></ul><ul><li>We talked about how anger effects us </li></ul><ul><li>We talked about the effect anger has on us in addiction and recovery </li></ul><ul><li>We talked about the negative and positives of anger </li></ul><ul><li>We looked at setting goals and self awareness </li></ul><ul><li>Using the SERENITY PRAYER to help us to see we needed to change . </li></ul>
