Alpheus and Arethusa Alpheus is the god of the river that bears his name, which flows near Olympia, in the northwest of the Peloponnese

He fell in love of nymph Arethusa, dear to Artemis, which one day immersed in its waters. But she didn’t prized his courtship and so she escaped in Sicily, on Siyracuse, on island of Ortigia, where the goddess Artemis turned her into a source.

But Alpheus reached her across the sea, and it mixed its waters with the waters of the nymph

This image is the bronze monument by sculptor Poidomani. Many Greek and Latin authors wrote about this original love: Ovid in "Metamorphosis"; Gabriele D'Annunzio in " The Oleander"; Salvatore Quasimodo in “Following Alpheus”; Cicerone in Verrine and Giosuè Carducci in “The Greek Springs”.
