  The only way to handle the drift is to obtain reliable speed measurements time to time - time in this case would mean interval of some minutes. The other way would be to have very exact time and acceleration measurements. Unfortunately the sensors built into these phones are simply not that exact.

  Measuring velocity with the accelerometer is not easy. Accelerometer measures acceleration, in order to get velocity, you need a reference speed (e.g. a moment of time when the device is stationary) and you have to integrate the acceleration by time which introduces accumulating errors. You will drift away from the real speed very quickly.
