In 1973, I flew on my carrier, Pan Am to Miami then connecting with AeroPeru to Arequipa and changed planes to a small prop, loaded with local Indians, landing at nighttime. My Father had a friend who was a missionary with World Free Radio, and he was instrumental in booking me a hotel downtown. Leaving the airport in a huge old American Buick for the ride downtown, much like you see on the streets of Havana and passing hundreds of flickering lights on the way. Once at the hotel, I remember it to be clean but the lobby was very dusty. I stayed in Lima for a few days, changing to a local Posada near the sea and walking several blocks to see the water and the beach, which was very rocky. Then headed to Machu Pinchu. At the small family hotel in Cuzco, there were oxygen tanks in the lobby....and then the owner gave me a cup of cocoa tea, which is supposedly to help with the altitude. The next day, I explored the ruins at Cuzco and remember standing in a group of llamas that seemed to appear out of nowhere. Afterwards, I retreated to the town and walked the cobbled streets. At one point I sat down on some steps outside a church and a local Indian in brilliant colors and a derby hat came up to me and stared into my face. Of course, I was alone, and blonde, I I think he may have never seen a blonde before. The next day I booked the train leading to Machu Pinchu. What a fantastic ride and view. The train would stop along the way, and my guide suggested that we pick up some local box lunches that were being sold along the tracks. It was filled with chicken and huge pieces of maize. Finally...arriving at the site, to which, at that time, you changed from the train to small jitney buses. Children would run alongside of the bus. The view from the top is nothing less than incredibly awe-inspiring. My guide then was an older local gentlemen, named Diego Rivera and gave me one of the books that he had written on Machu Piinchu, which I still treasure. The presentation on the slideshow above is exactly how I remember it. I had just started out in the airlines and this was one of my first trips as a tourist. Not bad for a young twenty-three year old woman!
