GMC <ul><li>General Medical Council </li></ul><ul><li>Established 1858 </li></ul><ul><li>“ The purpose of the General Medical Council (GMC) is to protect, promote and maintain the health and safety of the public by ensuring proper standards in the practice of medicine” </li></ul><ul><li>4 main functions: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Keep up to date registers of qualified doctors </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Foster good medical practice </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Promote good standards of medical education </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Deal with doctors whose fitness to practice is in doubt </li></ul></ul>

Medical Register <ul><li>Must be registered with GMC to practise medicine in the UK </li></ul><ul><li>Online register ‘List of Registered Medical Practitioners’ </li></ul><ul><li>Revalidation expected to start late 2012: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Doctors regularly demonstrate their fitness to practise through annual appraisals and recommendations </li></ul></ul>
  4. 4. Medical Education <ul><li>Sets requirements for undergraduate and postgraduate education </li></ul><ul><li>Inspects medical schools and deaneries </li></ul><ul><li>Publishes results </li></ul>

Fitness to practise <ul><li>Doctors referred to GMC if doubts about their fitness to practise </li></ul><ul><li>GMC can issue advice or warnings, or refer to fitness to practise panel </li></ul><ul><li>Panel can issue warnings, suspend doctors, or erase from register (struck off) </li></ul><ul><li>Cannot fine doctors or compensate patients </li></ul>
