What is E-Learning ?• The delivery of a learning, training or education program by electronicmeans.• E-learning involves the use of a computer or electronic device in some wayto provide training, educational or learning material. (Derek Stockley 2003)
• E-learning comprises all forms of electronically supported learning and teaching. The informationand communication systems, whether networked learning or not, serve as specific media toimplement the learning process.• The term will still most likely be utilized to reference out-of-classroom and in-classroom educationalexperiences via technology, even as advances continue in regard to devices and curriculum.• E-learning is essentially the computer and network-enabled transfer of skills and knowledge. E-learning applications and processes include Web-based learning, computer-based learning, virtualeducation opportunities and digital collaboration.• Content is delivered via the Internet, intranet/extranet, audio or video tape, satellite TV, and CD-ROM. It can be self-paced or instructor-led and includes media in the form of text, image, animation,streaming video and audio.• Abbreviations like CBT (Computer-Based Training), IBT (Internet-Based Training) or WBT (Web-Based Training) have been used as synonyms to e-learning. Today one can still find these termsbeing used, along with variations
3.6.2012 Use of Technology in Teaching and Learning • Used to support both teaching and learning. • Infuses classrooms with digital learning tools, such as computers and hand held devices. • Expands course offerings, experiences, and learning materials. • Supports learning 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. • Increases student engagement and motivation; and accelerates learning. • It links teachers to their students and to professional content, resources, and systems to help them improve their own instruction and personalize learning. • Increases educational productivity by accelerating the rate of learning; reducing costs associated with instructional materials or program delivery; and better utilizing teacher time. 6
