  2. 2. Zübeyde Hanım, mother ofMustafa Kemal Atatürk was bornin Lankaza in 1857, his childhoodand early youth,he was here withhis family.Her father name is SofuzadeFeyzullah (Sadullah) Ağa and hermother name is Ayşe(Molla)Hanım.
  3. 3. Zübeyde Hanıms firstmarriage was to Ali RızaEfendi.With her dark blonde hair,deep blue eyes and fairskin, she won theadmiration of Ali Rıza, aborder guard who insistedhe would only marry ablonde-haired, blue-eyedwoman.
  4. 4. Ali Rizas older sisterarranged this marriage - aswas the tradition at thattime.Zübeyde Hanım was in herearly teens and 20 yearsyounger than her husband.Their first child was Fatma,then Ömer and Ahmet wereborn, but they all died inchildhood.
  5. 5. Mustafa, later to becomeAtatürk, was born in 1881,followed by his sisterMakbule in 1885.They had a sister Naciye,born in 1889, whom they lostbecause of tuberculosis inchildhood.
  6. 6. Kemals father Ali Rıza, diedwhen Mustafa Kemal was sixyears old, making herparental influencedominant.She was 27, Zübeyde Hanımand her two children livedfor a period with her brotherHüseyin, who was themanager of a farm outsideSalonica.
  7. 7. In her second marriageshe was married toRagıp Bey, who had fourchildren from hisprevious marriage.She could not seeMustafa Kemal duringthe Turkish War ofIndependence in 1919.
  8. 8. After the Balkan Wars,when the Ottomanslost Salonica toGreece, she moved to ahouse in Beşiktaş-Akaretler, Istanbulwith her daughterMakbule.
  9. 9. After the Balkan Wars, whenthe Ottomans lost Salonica toGreece, she moved to a house inBeşiktaş-Akaretler, Istanbulwith her daughter Makbule.She moved to Ankara in 1922,but the climate was not suitablefor her, so she was sent toİzmir.She died there in 1923.
