Student: Kalen Franklin Grade: JK Nominee: Ms. Molyneaux School: St. Denis Catholic School Each day we write on the calendar and when we get to 100 it will be a fun day! I love this because it is a lot of fun. She is the most special teacher in the world because she is a very nice teacher.

Student: Matthew Hanson Grade: JK Nominee: Ms. Helyar School: Kimberley Junior P.S. I like Ms. Helyar because she tells us who the special helper is. She also lets us play the “Wizard Game” which is a lot of fun!

Student: William Robertson Grade: JK Nominee: Mrs. Karlov School: Williamson Road P.S. Mrs. Karlov is a cool teacher because she helps me read. She is a nice teacher, and she helped me read the letter “e.”

Student: Sadie Burns Grade: SK Nominee: Ms. Lo School: St. Denis Catholic School Ms. Lo teaches Senior Kindergarten at St. Dennis School. Some days when we are good she lets us watch television in school. When we are on the carpet she lets us sit beside our friends. My favourite moment with Ms. Lo is when we get to go to the gym and play “Octopus” and “Red Light/Green Light.”

Student: Christopher Holland Grade: SK Nominee: Mrs. Nauman School: Kew Beach Jr. P.S. I have Writer’s Workshop that Mrs. Nauman helps me with. She helps me to write the words. I like story time with her because she reads interesting books like the Balloon Tree.

Student: Benji Hoole Grade: SK Nominee: Ms. Austrich School: Balmy Beach I like my teacher because we always do journals on Mondays. I like journals because I get to write whatever I want. My favourite time with my teacher was when we went to Riverdale Farm on a class trip. I really liked the pigs and the cows.

Student: Parker Hughes Grade: SK Nominee: Mme. Nicole School: Williamson Road P.S. I am nominating my Junior Kindergarten teacher because she was nice.

Student: Griffin Smallwood Grade: SK Nominee: Ms. Schoop School: Kew Beach Jr. P.S. I like my teacher because she lets us do fun work that we get to bring home. On special occasions like Christmas, we made a star and an angel. I hung them on my Christmas tree. She lets us be the special helper just like at Oxford. She lets us pick a friend to go to the office. I like writing in my journal because I get to talk about what I did that month.

Student: Travis Truong Grade: SK Nominee: Mrs. Francis School: Kimberley P.S. I like Mrs. Francis because she is nice. She teaches me how to spell and how to write. Her class is fun because I get to play.

Student: Ricardo Blanco-Coloma Grade: 1 Nominee: Mr. Duco School: St. Denis Catholic School Mr. Duco helps us with Science and Community Helpers. He is going to be a teacher soon and he is happy. We play “Around the World,” which is a game and is fun.

Student: Stephanie Clarke Grade: 1 Nominee: Mme. McCarrey School: Williamson Road P.S. Mme. McCarrey est mon professeur de la 1e année. Ma journée préférée est quand j’ai fait un collage sur “le magasin.” C’était amusant! Merci Mme McCarrey.

Student: Willa Cuthbertson Grade: 1 Nominee: Ms. Ashrapova School: Balmy Beach C.S. Jr. My teacher does math with me and it is fun! She has number cards and I like to count. I can count up to 100 by counting by tens! I also like to write in my new journal. It is fun because I get to write about my weekend. I like her because she is really nice.

Student: Maggie Funnell Grade: 1 Nominee: Mr. O’Donnell School: Kew Beach Jr. P.S. I like Mr. O’Donnell because he is funny. We learn grade 3, 4, 5 and 6 Math. It is fun.

Student: Alyssa Hanson Grade: 1 Nominee: Ms. Thrush School: Kimberley Jr. P.S. I like Ms. Thrush because she makes our writing easy. She gives us ideas to write about and we write in our notebooks. I like the hundred chart on our nameplate that is on our desk. I like this chart because it helps me write my numbers.

Student: Julia Karkouti Grade: 1 Nominee: Mme. McCarrey School: Williamson Road P.S. Mme. McCarrey est mon professeur en 1e année. Elle m’aide avec les mots, elle me demande de faire les sons, et elle corrige mes fautes quand j’ai besoin d’aide. J’aime être dans sa classe!

Student: Charlotte Melnyk Grade: 1 Nominee: Mme. McCarrey School: Williamson Road P.S. My teacher sometimes lets us do activities. She is nice. She took us on a trip with parents. We got to go to “Kids Pick.” Everybody went into different groups and we saw very cool stuff. She teaches us about learning about reading and writing, and sometimes we make a story.

Student: Belle Mende Grade: 1 Nominee: Mme. Cumberbatch School: Williamson Road P.S. Mme. Cumberbatch est mon professeur de 1e année. C’était très amusant de lire l’histoire de “Mimi le souris.” Elle est très mignonne! J’aime beaucoup Mme. Cumberbatch!

Student: Trek Buccino Grade: 2 Nominee: Sarah A. School: Children’s Garden Jr. School Sarah A. taught me in Junior Kindergarten. She is funny and is always happy. We did Art and French and Montre et Raconte (or Show and Tell). I cannot think of a favourite memory because every second was great. I had three friends in her class, Clara, Logan and Christopher. I liked when she picked me up and gave me a big hug when I came back to visit when I got my tonsils out.

Student: Ellis Gibson Grade: 2 Nominee: Ms. Marikakis School: Chine Drive Public School I like her because she helps me with my math. She also helps me with my social studies projects by giving me ideas to work on.

Student: Wanda Gyimes Grade: 2 Nominee: Mr. Butters School: Bowmore Public School My favourite teacher is my music teacher. His name is Mr. Butters. He is fun. I like him because he tells me about new instruments.

Student: Jamie Peddle Grade: 2 Nominee: Mrs. Sills School: Norway Public School Mrs. Sills is my Grade Two teacher. I like when she reads funny books. I really like when we look at maps. Thank you, Mrs. Sills!

Student: Tyler Rae Grade: 2 Nominee: Mme. Matthews School: R. H. McGregor School Mme. Matthews est une professeure qui j’aime beaucoup. Elle nous apprend la drame et c’est mon sujet favori. Elle est très drôle, et elle lit des livres drôles.

Student: Mālik Blunt Grade: 3 Nominee: Ms. Chu School: Norway Public School I like spelling tests. They are fun. My favourite word is “elephant.” Ms. Chu gives me fun work for my class. She helps me by reading the questions. Ms. Chu is very nice.

Student: Christine Clarke Grade: 3 Nominee: Ms. Brand School: Williamson Road P.S. Ms. Brand is my music teacher. She is very nice. She teaches at Williamson Road. She knows how to speak French and English too. We do lots of musicals and lots of music lessons with my class. My core teacher, Mme. Cossette, is really good friends with Ms. Brand. She and I practice singing by listening to her radio. After having music lessons, my friends and I have all the songs stuck in our heads, but we like it a lot. Sometimes in music class, Ms. Brand teaches us some hand games. They’re so much fun for everybody in my class. Ms. Brand is the best music teacher ever in the whole world!

Student: William Ellis Grade: 3 Nominee: Mrs. Slater School: Norway Public School She teaches Math, Science, Social Studies, Art, Spelling, Reading, D.P.A. and Music.

Student: Julia Happy Grade: 3 Nominee: Ms. Salter School: Williamson Road P.S. Ms. Salter teaches J.K. and S.K. She draws objects on the board to help the class with adding. I like her because she helps me with work and she makes the work that we do fun! And she always gives us a second chance.

Student: Laura Karkouti Grade: 3 Nominee: Mr. Zimmerman School: Williamson Road P.S. Mr. Zimmerman était mon professeur en Maternelle. Il m’a enseigné la musique et il a joué la guitare. Il m’a appris comment chanter “Jupiter” et “J’aime parler français.” Il est très amusant!

Student: Elizabeth Kim Grade: 3 Nominee: Ms. Kearny School: Williamson Road P.S. My favourite teacher is Ms. Kearny. I like her because she would make sure that we always understood our subjects. Then she would also make sure that we were learning and having lots of fun. She made all of our worksheets fun. In Ms. Kearny’s class, I learned A LOT: how to graph, add, subtract, and even multiply a little bit! She taught me in Grade 1. I like Ms. Kearny so much! We still see each other for dinner sometimes. That is why I think Ms. Kearny is the best teacher!

Student: Matthew Sommerville Grade: 3 Nominee: Mrs. Malcom School: Norway Public School Every recess Mrs. Malcom lets us stay in and play. She challenges me by giving us 10-digit math numbers.

Student: Tyler Chui Grade: 4 Nominee: Mme. Brown School: Williamson Road P.S. Mme. Brown teaches Grade 4. She teaches French for most of the day, and English after afternoon recess. She’s my favourite teacher because she brought my class and two other Grade 4 classes to Casa Loma. I like her class because I have three friends in the class. She’s a nice, nice, nice teacher.

Student: Abbey Horner Grade: 4 Nominee: Mrs. Cajolet School: Balmy Beach I nominate Mrs. Cajolet because she inspired me by how much she tries to help. She helps me by talking to me independently and puts me in clubs to help me learn (like printing club). I also like her because she’s calm and makes me feel comfortable. She taught me in Grade 3. My favourite moment with her was when she was giving me my first certificate and when the class sang in a circle around me on my birthday. She also let Eliot crawl all over me and the carpet. She makes learning fun by putting questions on tests that are funny. She challenged us by giving us Grade 4 CASI.

Student: Arun Jolly Marlier Grade: 4 Nominee: Ms. Withers School: Kew Beach Jr. P.S. Ms. Withers teaches a grade 4/5 split class with 32 kids. She teaches Language Arts, Math, Art, Drama, Gym, Science, Social Studies and Music. Ms. Wither always makes jokes out of the questions and leaves hints on the blackboard if someone gets stuck. She makes challenges by giving us a lot of questions. Ms. Withers always helps students in need. My favourite moment with Ms. Withers was when we played “Hot Seat.”

Student: Stephanie Martin Grade: 4 Nominee: Ms. Siggner School: Williamson Road P.S. Ms. Siggner is my teacher right now. She teaches a grade 4/5 split. I like my teacher because she is fun and we have a marble jar that we put marbles in for good behaviour. If we fill up the jar we get a party! The best moment with my teacher was when I gave her a birthday present! I love my teacher!

Student: Erika Namaizawa Grade: 4 Nominee: Ms. Knox School: Bowmore Public School This year for the Educator of the Year I am nominating Ms. Knox from my Japanese school. She always helps me do the 3 alphabets called Kanji, Hiragana and Katakana. She sings to us and then uses the song to help us learn in music class. This year we are going to do a play called The Magic Monkey. When two people both wanted the same part in the play, she let them play a game and whoever won got the part. She also cares about everybody equally.

Student: Liam Prieditis Grade: 4 Nominee: Mrs. Wukasch School: Fairmount Jr. P.S. I would like to nominate Mrs. Wukasch because she doesn’t shout very much. She teaches me a lot of stuff and teaches me every subject very clearly. She helps me a lot with math. I really liked how she didn’t move from place to place as she spoke. She is really nice to me.

Student: Jordan Shabsove Grade: 4 Nominee: Mr. Mandel School: Balmy Beach My favourite teacher is Mr. Mandel. He is my favourite teacher because he is not strict and he is lots of fun. He is fun because during projects he will let us watch a movie. Sometimes he lets us go outside and conduct experiments (like, will a ball go farther if it is rolled on sand, concrete, or grass?). He is also really nice because for Show and Tell he lets me bring my dog Tivo. Mr. Mandel is really funny. One year he dressed up as a bagel for Halloween. Mr. Mandel is a really nice person. I love Mr. Mandel!

Student: Grace Rockett Grade: 4 Nominee: Mr. Zimmerman School: Williamson Road P.S. I nominate Mr. Zimmerman because he makes learning very, very fun. He teaches me a lot of fun stuff that I never knew. Every day he makes a lot of jokes. He does a lot of videos with me. I like him because once he let me have a solo in one of his shows. Also, on Fridays he gives everyone a different type of candy. HE’S THE BEST TEACHER EVER!

Student: Bailey Allems Grade: 5 Nominee: Ms. Van Slyke School: Kew Beach Jr. P.S. I think Ms. Van Slyke should be nominated for Educator of the Year because she loves books and we have a big selection of books. Three times a week we have a “Read Aloud.” We don’t get much homework and she tries to make our work fun. That’s why Ms. Van Slyke should be nominated!

Student: Patrick Danziger Grade: 5 Nominees: Mr. Zimmerman and Mr. Hughs School: Williamson Road P.S. Mr. Zimmerman taught me in kindergarten. Mr. Zimmerman made learning fun with music. He was a great teacher. Mr. Hughs is a great teacher too! He sometimes teaches us Spanish. He reads to the class and he is good at it.

Student: Jonathon Fisher Grade: 5 Nominee: Mr. Hughs School: Williamson Road P.S. Mr. Hughs was my English teacher in grade 4. He made learning fun because he did not yell much, we played games in class and he read us lots of stories. Once, we played a game and had to flip a small carpet while 6 people were on it.

Student: Rachael Kelly Grade: 5 Nominee: Mme. Cooke School: Williamson Road P.S. Mme. Cooke enseigne les maths, les sciences, les arts at le français. Elle est amusante parce que parfois elle joue les jeux de maths avec nous. Elle nous donne des défis comme quand elle nous donne les questions très difficiles. Elle utilise l’enthousiasme quand elle explique les choses. Mon moment préféré était quand notre classe a créé les masques.

Student: Michaela Mende Grade: 5 Nominee: Mme. Cooke School: Williamson Road P.S. Mme. Cooke teaches Grade 5 at Williamson Road. I like her because she’s really nice and I like how she teaches. After school or at recess, she helps me understand things that we learned in school, and she goes over the stuff we already learned so that I can prepare for tests. That’s why I nominate Mme. Cooke for the Educator of the Year.

Student: Amit Nehru Grade: 5 Nominee: Pierre Tredille School: St. Michael’s Choir School Pierre is my French tutor at Oxford. He makes learning fun by relating and connecting things to his experiences. He challenges me by making me repeat what I learned without his help. Pierre’s teaching strategy is to teach me the concept and then quiz me on it. He also teaches extra points that are relevant to the topic. This will help me to understand more of what I learned and have a head start at school. What inspires me about Pierre is his creativity and how his mood makes dull work fun. I don’t have a favourite moment with Pierre because every time I learn with him I enjoy it very much!

Student: Carlyn Smith Grade: 5 Nominee: Mlle. Valentim School: St. Denis Catholic School Mlle. Valentim is my French teacher. She makes learning fun by doing art-related work. My favourite artwork piece that we did in class is the one that we are doing now. It is a friendship cube. That is a cube that we do about a partner in our class. My favourite moment with my teacher was when she told us a funny story about when she first moved to France.

Student: Kloé Tambakis Grade: 5 Nominee: Mme Nadine Archambault School: George Étienne Cartier Mme Nadine, elle m’a enseigné dans la 4e année et elle a toujours été mon entraineuse d’improvisation. Elle a rendu l’école d’ennuyant à amusant! Elle est très gentille et elle ne se fache pas souvent. Elle est belle à l’intérieur et à l’extérieur. Je n’ai pas de doute qu’elle va se trouver un prince! Je me souviens quand j’ai découvert que j’étais dans sa class! Ohhh, j’étais contente!! Ça c’est pourquoi j’adore Mme. Nadine.

Student: Anonymous Grade: 6 Nominee: Mrs. Forsythe School: Williamson Road P.S. Mrs. Forsythe is my favourite teacher for many reasons: She teaches in a fun way. She lets us have gum in class. She’s nice. I could go on forever, but I have to limit myself to these 16 lines. I remember this one time when she put lipstick on Dylan when he was Serena Williams for Halloween!

Student: Gabriella Banhara Grade: 6 Nominee: Ms. Quinlan School: St. John Catholic School Ms. Quinlan teaches Grade 6 English. She makes learning fun by having big parties and not being very strict. She challenges us in the classroom by telling us to “keep trying.” My favourite moment was when she agreed to do my reference.

Student: Ben Cherry Grade: 6 Nominee: Mr. Robinson School: Royal St. George’s College Mr. Robinson teaches my grade 6 homeroom. He is great at turning class into a fun period. He manages to do that by keeping his students interested with his stories. He challenges us by telling us the answers before we do the questions and then work them out together on the board. He’s a great coach and he really is dedicated to teaching kids strategies and ways to learn. My favourite moment with my teacher was at the end of the last game of the U12 soccer team. Mr. Robinson told me (I was the captain of the team) that I had an amazing year, and he said that he knew he made the right choice by making me the captain.

Student: Christian Figueiredo Grade: 6 Nominee: Mrs. Aleksic School: St. John Catholic School I am nominating my English teacher, Mrs. Aleksic. Mrs. Aleksic always likes to show us new forms of poetry in writing class and I enjoy that very much. Mrs. Aleksic is the kind of person who expects very highly of us in writing (especially when we are doing activities for the book “Maniac Magee”). Mrs. Aleksic uses special techniques for teaching: When marking our work, she uses special symbols for saying “new paragraph,” spelling errors, etc. Also, when starting an assignment she reads us examples from previous years. For all of these reasons, I think that Mrs. Aleksic should be Educator of the Year.

Student: Cole Finlayson Grade: 6 Nominee: Paul Finlayson School: St. Denis Catholic School I want to nominate my dad because he teaches me all kinds of things, like how to ride a bike, and how to play baseball, chess, and checkers. My dad makes learning fun by taking me to Dairy Queen or watching a movie with me. My dad is always there for me, and always pushes me to do my best. He inspires me a lot of times, such as being in the top 100 in his job, which, just to let you know, is all around the whole entire world.

Student: Connor McCauley Grade: 6 Nominee: Ms. McCubbin School: Balmy Beach I am nominating my teacher Ms. McCubbin because she is the most fun teacher ever. When she doesn't feel like doing Math, we do other fun activities that she gives us. I really like the projects we do because they’re interesting and fun. Also, on Monday, she chooses 3 kids and they choose what to do in gym. She is the best teacher anyone could have!

Student: Annie Telford Grade: 6 Nominee: Ms. Baumgartner School: Williamson Road P.S. Ms. Baumgartner taught me last year in Grade 5 and is teaching me right now in Grade 6. She has taught me multiplication, division, reading, writing, language arts, and confidence. She is my favourite teacher so far because she is nice, quiet, firm, and never yells. I love my teacher!

Student: Quinn Bray Grade: 7 Nominee: Ms. Austin School: D. A. Morrison Middle School I am going to nominate Ms. Austin because she finds fun ways to learn! She will make up games to help us learn. She also makes up fun projects to do! She always listens to our requests. Ms. Austin lets us go out for DPA when we don’t have gym or pool. If she notices we are tired or unenergetic, she will give us a snack or a break. She is the best teacher ever!

Student: Mikey Crooks Grade: 7 Nominee: Miss Moreal School: Holy Name Catholic School Miss Moreal is my homeroom teacher who teaches me writing, reading, religion and A LOT of math. I enjoy being her student because she makes class a lot more fun by telling related stories and funny jokes. She also (for the first time in my life) made Math more enjoyable for me. Not only does she make things fun, but I also like her style in dressing and her personality.

Student: Kate Semple Grade: 7 Nominee: Mrs. Aguila School: St. Brigid Catholic School I nominate my teacher Mrs. Aguila. She’s my teacher for Gym, Drama, Religion, Drama, and Fully Alive. She also teaches Math and Language, but I don’t go to those classes. She makes learning fun because she makes jokes and gives us assignments that are interesting. She also gives us treats every once and a while and she gives us word games. If you get the word game done first, you get a treat. There are boys in our class that sometimes get wild, but she makes a joke and it makes them smile. I think that it is good to laugh because then kids enjoy the work more. This is why I nominate my teacher, Mrs. Aguila. I think she is a very good teacher.

Student: Paola Studer Grade: 7 Nominee: Peyton Lung School: EAST Alternative The teacher I’m nominating is Peyton Lung from EAST Alternative. He is my favourite teacher because he teaches my favourite subject, Gym. Peyton teaches both grades 7 and 8. He makes learning fun and his class is enjoyable. Not all teachers listen to their students, but he does. Even with the subjects I don’t like, I have learned to like them more. Once a month he lets us decide what we’ll do in gym for the period. My favourite unit is track and field. Peyton promises that we will have a longer unit in track and we might even have a track team.

Student: Michael Teixeira Grade: 7 Nominee: Mrs. Tarnowski School: Our Lady of Fatima I chose Mrs. Tarnowski because she makes work fun by doing experiments and working in groups.

Student: Liz Ward Grade: 7 Nominee: Mr. Papafrangos School: Duke of Connaught Sr. P.S. My teacher Mr. P. has made a difference for the better in my life because he really cares about the whole class’ work. When he gives us work, he tells us, “Don’t you ever hand me in a test with nothing on it or anything that is less than your best.” That means he really cares about our work and marks.

Student: Isabel Fleischer Grade: 8 Nominee: Ms. Webb School: Voice Intermediate School Ms. Webb teaches History and Theatre. She makes History class fun by dressing up as the person that we are learning about. For example, when we were learning about the Confederation, we all dressed up as Fathers of Confederation and she was John A. McDonald. When we learned about Louis Riel, she dressed up as Louis and we made pemmican. Not only do we have tests, but we create newscasts and write letters about what was happening at that time in history. When we learned about the five factors leading to Confederation we did newscasts about what was happening. With Ms. Webb, learning is never boring. There is always a fun way of learning it or a fun activity that you can do. Not only is Ms. Webb a great teacher, she’s a great mentor and is easy to talk to.

Student: Ellis R. C. Hulbert Grade: 8 Nominee: A. Papafrangos School: Glen Ames Public School I would like to nominate my 7th Grade teacher Mr. P. for this award because he is awesome! It was in his class (and no, I wasn’t sleeping!) that I got the inspiration for my book (which is now a glorious 75 pages in Size 12, Times New Roman font, typed)! He was able to teach me what I needed to be taught, and help me find a way to enjoy school again. He was friendly and nice and totally cool, dude! He was able to make T-T, T-W-T, T-W, and T-S connections to the things he taught. It was fun working with him and I hope to do it again someday. P.S. When you meet him, you’ll know what I’m talking about. He is awesome and I’m sure you’ll think so too!

Student: Alex Prieditis Grade: 7 Nominee: Esme Kwong School: Bliss Carman Sr. P.S. I want to nominate my mom because she inspires me to try to be the best at everything I do. She has also inspired me to try new foods and techniques in math. She always tells me to never give up and this helps me with school because good things happen when you never give up. When my brother or I do something bad, I try to learn from the mistakes or else I could get into a lot of trouble. Most people wouldn’t be inspired by getting in trouble, but my parents are just trying to keep my brother and me safe. My mom is very good at teaching me lessons from my mistakes. For all of these reasons, this is why my mom inspires me.

Student: Cameron Aitkens Grade: 9 Nominee: Ms. Baker School: Danforth C.I. Ms. Baker was my gr. 8 teacher at Bowmore P.S. She taught me English, Art, Geography, and History. Ms. Baker was very inspirational to me because she had a very strong personality and teaching method. She was strong in her beliefs and rules, an area where many of my previous teachers have wavered. The most valuable thing about her was how she never gave up on anyone. If someone is not doing well, she will stick with you until you are back on your feet. Her teaching method is fun because she turns the classroom into a democracy. A lot of things in her class are decided by reason and debate. One of the best times I’ve had with Ms. Baker was in Drama class. She takes Drama seriously but still tolerates a sense of humour and includes shy people. That is why Ms. Baker, a terrific and inspiring teacher, should be Educator of the Year.

Student: DJ Hann Grade: 9 Nominee: Mr. Matthews School: Malvern C.I. This is my first year at Malvern C.I. So many teachers could have been nominated for Educator of the Year, but one especially stood out. After my schedule was changed a couple of times, I was placed in Mr. Matthews grade 9 Art class. He was very welcoming and a great teacher. Teaching seems to come naturally to Mr. Matthews. He is very funny and practical. I love hearing funny stories about his wife and daughters, like the one about him playing a princess board game and losing to his daughter. Mr. Matthews deserves to be honoured as Educator of the Year because in my eyes, he has made Art class extremely fun and I look forward to going every time. Though I don’t have too much experience in Art, Mr. Mathews gives clear and strict instructions, which allow you to do the best you can. He is a teacher that should be honoured for his success.

Student: Dayna Myers Grade: 9 Nominee: Mrs. Gage School: Malvern C.I. I nominate Mrs. Gage for Educator of the Year because I look up to her, even though I do not have her for any of my classes. She always pushes me to do my best in school so that I can partake in school sports. She’s a very open teacher and I feel like if I needed to talk to an adult, I’d go to her. I strive to be like her when I’m older. She’s a hardworking, nice and funny woman who everyone in the school loves. That is why she should be Educator of the Year.

Student: Blake Drohan Grade: 10 Nominee: Mr. Patterson School: Malvern C.I. I nominate Mr. Patterson for the Educator of the Year because he makes all of his classes memorable. Mr. Patterson brings lots of energy and fun to his class. He makes Drama a class that completes my day and that I look forward to. Also, Mr. Patterson can teach us necessary techniques in Drama in fun ways that keep us laughing. My favourite moment with Mr. Patterson was when we were doing a unit on illusion and he asked me to sit behind a table before the class came in. He then got me to pretend that my hand was his. Mr. Patterson is a great teacher who always has a fun and informative class.

Student: James Bannister Grade: 10 Nominee: Mr. Beaudry School: Malvern C.I. Mr. Beaudry is my Grade 10 History teacher. He makes History fun and understandable. He gets to the point and doesn’t make class seem like an eternity.

Student: Kelly Baker Grade: 11 Nominee: Mr. McMorrow School: Notre Dame H.S. The teacher I would like to nominate is my gr. 11 World Religions teacher, Mr. McMorrow. He is my nomination because when he teaches us, he always brings in a story or visuals to enhance our learning of the subject. To challenge our learning, Mr. McMorrow would ask us different scenarios that would or could apply to the religion that we were studying. His teaching techniques are that he would take a whole class to go over our homework so we could get a better understanding of what we learned. My favourite moment with Mr. McMorrow is when he was teaching the class about Judaism and he brought in authentic objects that are used in prayer and festivals.

Student: Conor Craig Grade: 11 Nominee: Ms. Parmar-Naples School: Malvern C.I. I am nominating my grade 11 Math teacher, Ms. Parmar-Naples. She is great at connecting with students and making her class a fun and enjoyable environment for everyone. She always takes the time to help you understand the material and she is never hesitant to put in extra time before or after school. I feel that she is easy to talk to and you can have any conversation with her. My favourite moment with her was when my friend and I had a conversation with her. It was very enjoyable and many jokes were made, but we always show her respect. For these reasons, I nominate Ms. Parmar-Naples for Educator of the Year.

Student: Syra Dhaliwal Grade: 11 Nominee: Ms. Hartley School: Malvern C.I. Of all the teachers I have had, Mr. Hartley is definitely my favourite. What I like the most about him is that he has a good balance of strictness and kindness. He knows when to be a teacher and when to give us a break. He also takes our age into account and knows what it is like to be a teenager. Whenever a report card is coming up, he gives us optional bonus assignments to boost our marks. He’s really funny, and I always enjoy being in his class. He isn’t overly nice; he just gives back what you put in and is very fair. Mr. Hartley is also my snowboarding coach, and he’s the best coach! When we go on trips, he’s so great to talk to. We can talk to him about our lives and he won’t hold anything against us. Overall, he’s an amazing teacher.

Student: Andre Kostiw-Gill Grade: 11 Nominee: Mrs. Morrison School: RHSA I moved to Australia when I was 10 and left the following year. It was difficult to make this quick transition from Canadian culture to Australian. Mrs. Morrison made this transition easier and helped me understand Australian culture and customs through her teaching. She was very passionate about teaching her country’s unique history to the class. She also made classroom work positive and she did this with her teaching methods. Finally, she allowed me to enjoy my time in Australia while learning about the culture.

Student: Sam Pelot Grade: 11 Nominee: Mr. Lumsden School: St. Michael’s College School Mr. Lumsden was my gr. 9 and 10 Math teacher at SMCS. He was by far the best, most aware, engaging and understanding teacher that has ever held a piece of chalk! Mr. Lumsden is the best because, as he would say, he is simply the best! He is the most aware teacher because he seems to have a 360º view of everything in his room. Nothing gets by him. Mr. Lumsden is the most engaging teacher not only because of his hilarious stories, but also because of his teaching style. He asks a student to solve a problem on the board, but at the same time, explains to the class the step-by-step process of solving the problem. It’s a personal, one-to-one teaching style while at the same time teaching the entire class. He is also the most understanding man I have ever had the pleasure of talking to; his upbeat personality made talking with him easy, and his confidence made his advice the best there is. He understands that boys will be boys. That is why Mr. Lumsden is the best teacher ever to hold a piece of chalk.

Student: Lily Vonk Grade: 11 Nominee: Mr. Curic School: Monarch Park C.I. Mr. Curic teaches gr. 9-12 math, and unlike several unnamable teachers I have been acquainted with, he actually loves his job. He created the concept of “superstars.” Every Friday, he brings the class a different kind of mind challenger. If you achieve the highest score, he awards you with bonus marks — thus challenging you and rewarding you while at the same time keeping a level of fun. He is unique among teachers because he does not look down on you. He approaches you with the sense that you are an equal human being. Because he does this with such authenticity, every one of his students respects him. He works with you to make a plan for higher marks and makes himself available if you ask for it. He is constantly encouraging students to speak up during classes, and he stands out exponentially from every other teacher I’ve encountered. His capacity for understanding and helpfulness never ceases to amaze me, and because of this he is more like my Educator of All Time.

Student: Maggie Brennand Grade: 12 Nominee: Ms. Lu School: North Toronto C.I. Ms. Lu is a great lady. She teaches Grade 12 Advanced Functions and Calculus; clearly she is exceptionally smart. She is a fantastic teacher and is always available to help. She is the best math teacher I’ve ever had. Ms. Lu is a very funny woman and likes to laugh; by this she makes our classroom experience fun and lighter. Ms. Lu challenges us in the classroom by calling on each student to answer a question, regardless of if we know the answer. My favourite moments with Ms. Lu are when she helps me right before a test and answers my last minute questions. I am lucky to have her as a teacher.

Student: Samantha Bright Grade: 12 Nominee: Ms. Gage School: Malvern C.I. Ms. Gage teaches Phys. Ed., Personal Fitness as well as coaching a number of female athletic teams at Malvern. I have personally had her for 3 years as a teacher, and all 4 years for 2 sports teams. She runs activities during class that almost everyone enjoys and teaches people how to keep active. She works with students individually to improve their physical fitness, as well as promoting healthy nutrition. As a coach, she is very inspiring and a great leader to cheer you on from the sidelines. Her words are motivational and comforting, and enough to warm up the team before a big game. During 2009, she led both my teams to OFSAA, which was a great achievement!

Student: Harry Guloien Grade: 12 Nominee: Mr. Nicolet School: North Toronto C.I. Mr. Nicolet teaches Geography, World Issues and Environmental Management. He has inspired me and many others to be more environmentally conscious. He includes the students in his lessons and makes them fun. Mr. Nicolet is funny and isn’t much older than his students.

Student: Stephanie Hyde Grade: 12 Nominee: Ms. Blackmore School: Malvern C.I. Ms. Blackmore teaches Gr. 11 Biology, Gr. 9 Phys. Ed., and Gr. 12 Exercise Science. She is always enthusiastic about learning. She makes her students want to come to class and learn. One day in Exercise Science we were learning about nutrition, so she decided to have us make smoothies to learn about the different amounts of nutrients in fruit. She always encourages her students and is always available for extra help. She likes to teach using overheads with fill-in-the-blanks, so we’re not just copying down notes. Although the class is a lot of fun, she makes her tests quite challenging. She inspires me to try my hardest at everything I do. A great moment I had with my teacher was when she came out to cheer and watch her students play field hockey. I think she is the best teacher I have ever had and should definitely be considered for Educator of the Year.

Student: Alexis Mallett Grade: 12 Nominee: Mr. Frost School: North Toronto C.I. Mr. Frost was my grade 4 teacher at Maurice Cody P.S. That year, class was the only time I really enjoyed learning, and it showed, as I was constantly getting the highest test scores. Mr. Frost was able to be strict but fun-loving at the same time. His sarcastic humour set him high in my books, but his ability to engage all the kids in my class really made me respect him. I like how he would announce the top 3 test scores when giving back a test, because it really made me want to do well. Mr. Frost is a great teacher, and better yet, a great guy. I will always remember him as one of the best teachers I have ever had; he has made a huge impact on who I am today!
