    Tail Rotors
  • Tail rotors are required for single main rotor helicopters
    To eliminate tail rotors there are 4 other main rotor configuration
    Coaxial
    Tandem
    Side by side
    Intermeshing
    These systems are much more complex
    Single main & tail rotor system is the best compromise.
    Tail rotor must have pitch change, and flap axis
    Positive and negative pitch
    Controlled by foot pedals

  • Must be driven by transmission – always driven
    Due to tail boom flexibility T/R shaft must be able to move in and out
    Hanger bearings are used to support shaft and provide alignment
    Alignment is important for reducing vibration
    It may be necessary to divert T/R D/S if T/R is mounted on top of vertical stab.
    An IGB would be used in this case
    IGB changes direction but not speed.
