2. Planes Used (Japan)
Mitsubishi A6M ZEKE ZERO
Nakagima Dive Bombers carrying 500g
bombs and/or DEEP Torpedoes.
Below is the Mitsubishi A6M
ZEKE ZERO, which was used
by Japanese pilots. Also, this
was most commonly used by
kamikaze aircraft fighters who
committed suicide by flying into
the sides of Allied ships.
Below is the Nakagima Dive
Bomber. It carried almost 500g
of explosives and often dropped
torpedoes into the harbor to sink
the destroyers.
3. Innovations On Torpedoes
The Japanese put wooden fins on their torpedoes.
This allowed the torpedoes not to sink as far under
the water as regular torpedoes.
The torpedo to the left was
used by German naval
ships…but the Japanese
used similar torpedoes to
that, the only difference
being that the wings of the
torpedo were made of
wood so that it wouldn’t
sink as much as a regular
torpedo would. The
Japanese used this
method because Pearl
Harbor wasn’t very deep at
all.
4. U.S. Ships
All of the below are battleships.
Arizona-exploded and then sunk, now is a
monument.
Oklahoma-Capsized and Refloated in 1943
West Virginia-Sunk, returned to service in
1994
California-Sunk, returned to service in 1944
Nevada-Returned to service in 1942
Tennessee-Returned to service in 1942
Maryland-Returned to service in 1942
Pennsylvania-Minimal damage done.
5. U.S. Ships (cont’d.)
Utah-Capsized, total loss
Helena-Returned to service in 1942
Raleigh-Minimal damage done
Honolulu-Light damage, remained in
service.
Cassin-Returned to service in 1944
Downes-Returned to service in 1943
Shaw-Returned to service in 1942
6. Submarines
Used by the Japanese
Type A Midget Submarine
All submarines were sunk by United
States ships like the USS Condor and
the USS Ward
Left: The Type A Midget Submarine to the left
is what the Japanese most likely used during
the attacks on Pearl Harbor. Reports say that
four submarines entered the harbor to fire
torpedoes at naval ships stationed in the
harbor. All four submarines were sunk. Out of
the four, only three shots were fired from the
submarines combined. Out of those three
shots only one hit their target.
