Results and Findings

The project was carried out successfully

B2MML has a high learning curve but fits perfectly for a integration scenario with SAP XI on the ERP-side.

A Coupling System Component Web Server (Proxy) on the MES-side for B2MML-based communication offers maximum connectivity, if no B2MML connector is available.

This is a reusable out-of-the-box-solution, which fits for a global integration scenario.

Frank Bezjak, Martin Zeller

    7. 7. Business Process

At Bayer the plant assets are managed with a module called Technical Shift Book, a development by BBS.

All the events that occur during a shift are documented and recorded in the technical shift book.

The information that is relevant for completing the required data for these messages is either stored in Historian Databases, or is available in an MES system.

Frank Bezjak, Martin Zeller
    8. 8. TSB - Technical Shift Book Frank Bezjak, Martin Zeller
    9. 9. Event based massaging

The events that occur during a production process are called Z1-Z4 messages, related to the TSB policy.

The messages are divided in to groups.

The first group contains the Z1-Z3 messages. This group should be visualized before communicated to SAP.

The second group, the Z4 messages, should be communicated to SAP without further processing.

Frank Bezjak, Martin Zeller

    11. 11. Technical Concept (1/2) Frank Bezjak, Martin Zeller
    12. 12. Technical concept (2/2)

SAP XI bridges the gap between the TSB and B2MML format.

Establishes a communication between MES and ERP with SOA based on B2MML.

The mapping between B2MML and MES on the plant site was done with a custom solution.

Coupling Software Component (CSC) was built with a .NET Framework, IIS, B2MML schemas, and an Oracle Database

Frank Bezjak, Martin Zeller
    13. 13. SAP XI

Therefore the first step of the integration was the mapping of the Z1 – Z4 messages to the B2MML-V0300-Material schema, based on the mandatory data fields.

The outgoing message is Maintenance Request and the incoming message is Maintenance Response.

Finally this process is offered through WSDL and this is the basis for the Coupling Software on the plant site.

Frank Bezjak, Martin Zeller
    14. 14. Coupling Software Component

The MES and the CSC are coupled via database transaction tables.

A B2MML proxy was created with the SAP XI WSDL.

In order to manage outgoing and incoming messages an ASP.NET website was programmed.

To automate the communication of the Z4 messages a Windows Service was implemented on the Microsoft server.

Frank Bezjak, Martin Zeller

    16. 16. Agenda

Introduction

Results and Findings

Business Processes

Technical Realization

Conclusion and Outlook

Frank Bezjak, Martin Zeller
    17. 17. Conclusion and Outlook (1/2)

Using B2MML delivers an advantage from a pure technical perspective.

To our experience the advantage from an organizational perspective is even more important.

Application specialists are usually familiar with either ERP or MES. For integration purposes both groups developed a joint solution.

After both groups learned to use B2MML, it was rather easy to run the integration, since both groups now have a common understanding based on syntax and semantics of B2MML.

Frank Bezjak, Martin Zeller
    18. 18. Conclusion and Outlook (2/2)

Thus the technical interface also serves as an organizational interface.

The experience that was gained will be benefitial for future projects.

In the future MES systems built-in B2MML functionality will be available. Additional interface layers may then become obsolete.

In the pilot project B2MML was used for plant maintenance. Meanwhile B2MML is further used in projects with focus on production. These projects also benefit from the described advantages.

Frank Bezjak, Martin Zeller
