AgendaContextThe DilemmaThe SolutionPositive Results—Two Case StudiesQ&A 2
ContextEl Paso was working to contain our softwaremaintenance cost burdenIn late 2008, we renewed our focus on costs asa result of the global economic downturnA majority of El Paso’s large E&P softwarelicenses were managed by FlexLM 3
The DilemmaChanges in our business model called forscrutiny and a shift in software capacitiesLimited server-based licensing solutionsincentivized “license hogging”We had little metric-based visibility intousage to combat unchecked growth inlicense requests 4
The SolutionEl Paso invested in the OpenIT tool – Both License Analyzer and License Optimizer modules were purchased – OpenIT serves as an additional analysis layer on top of our FlexLM architectureLicense Optimizer was installed on a number of ourengineering and geoscience desktopsWe began using OpenIT reports to get a clear pictureof our usage statistics 5
Positive Results—Case Study #1Business users requested more licenses for a high-endGeoscience ApplicationLicense checkout denials were becoming more frequentWe utilized OpenIT to scrutinize usage – discovered that at least half of the licenses were often in “perpetual checkout” – It was determined that the number of licenses we currently owned was sufficient for our usage – Using OpenIT metrics, the user community gained insight into the problem and changed behaviors – The cost of OpenIT to El Paso was less than just one new license of this product 6
Positive Results—Case Study #2We conducted an assessment of a large number of licensesused by both our Geoscience and Engineering disciplinesUtilizing OpenIT tools to determine productive use, it wasdiscovered that we were over-licensed, and that a materialportion of users who had reserved licenses were only infrequentusers, if even thatAs a result of this study, we were able to eliminate severalhundred thousand dollars of yearly software costsThe cost savings far outstripped our investment in theOpenIT tool 7
