While Martin was still a soldier at Samarobriva (modern Amiens in France) he experienced the vision that became the most-repeated story about his life. He was at the gates of the city of Samarobriva with his soldiers when he met a scantily dressed beggar. He impulsively cut his own military cloak in half and shared it with the beggar. From the late 4th century to the late Middle Ages, much of Western Europe, including Great Britain, engaged in a period of fasting beginning on the day after St. Martin's Day, November 11. St Martin is the patron saint of the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps, which has a medal in his name.
