  1. 1. Christian Vocation & Mission IV : Teaching Whispering Hope MC 24 June 2012
  2. 2. WHAT TEACHERS MAKEThe dinner guests were sitting around the table discussinglife. One man, a CEO, decided to explain the problem witheducation. He argued, “Whats a kid going to learn fromsomeone who decided his best option in life was to becomea teacher?”He reminded the other dinner guests what they say aboutteachers:Those who can, do. Those who cant, teach.‘To stress his point he said to another guest;“Youre a teacher, Bonnie. Be honest. What do you make?”
  3. 3. Bonnie, who had a reputation for honesty and Franknessreplied, “You want to know what I make?”(She paused for a second, then began...)“Well, I make kids work harder than they ever thought theycould.I make a C+ feel like the Congressional Medal of Honor.I make kids sit through 40 minutes of class time when theirparents cant make them sit for 5 without an I Pod, GameCube or movie rental. You want to know what I make?”(She paused again and looked at each and every person atthe table.)
  4. 4. I make kids wonder.I make them question.I make them apologize and mean it.I make them have respect and take responsibility for theiractions.I teach them to write and then I make them write.Keyboarding isnt everything.I make them read, read, read.I make them show all their work in math. They use their Godgiven brain, not the man-made calculator.
  5. 5. I make my students from other countries learn everythingthey need to know in English while preserving their uniquecultural identity.I make my classroom a place where all my students feelsafe.I make my students stand, placing their hand over their heartto say the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag, One NationUnder God, because we live in the United States of America. Finally, I make them understand that if they use the gifts theywere given, work hard, and follow their hearts, they cansucceed in life.”
  6. 6. (Bonnie paused one last time and then continued.)“Then, when people try to judge me by what I make, with meknowing money isnt everything, I can hold my head up highand pay no attention because they are ignorant...You want to know what I make?I MAKE A DIFFERENCE .What do you make Mr. CEO?”His jaw dropped, he went silent.
  7. 7. What is happening in our schools today?• Examania• Youth assault• Teenage pregnancies• Baby dumping• Striving without significance
  8. 8. What is Jesus saying to us?Matthew 9:35-38 (Todays New International Version)35 Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness.36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then he said to his disciples, "The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. 38 Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field."
  9. 9. God’s View vs Society’s ViewSociety says teachers are at the bottom of the scale in status & prestige.God says teachers rank at the top of the scale. He sent his Son to be a teacher.
  10. 10. What is God saying to us?Matthew 9:35-38 (Todays New International Version)35 Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their schools, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness.36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then he said to his disciples, "The harvest is plentiful but the teachers are few. 38 Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out teachers into his harvest field."

  12. 12. There are many positions of authority where you can make others behave in a certain way. But there are only twowhere you can actually influence people to want to do the right thing: being a parent and being a teacher. If you do it right, the way you live your life will influence your students to want to do the right thing - without even realizing it .
  13. 13. Ripples of Influence6 classes x 30 A teacher comes into contact= 180 students with 6,300 young lives in a teaching lifetime. If each of those individuals were to35 years x 180 influence just 200 more, the= 6300 students number rises to ain a lifetime staggering 1.26 million. And the ripples go on, to the edge of eternity.
  14. 14. Romans 10:13-15 (Todays New International Version)13 for, "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." 14 How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? 15 And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!"
