Purpose and History of the Fabric of Cal
This is the sixth Fabric of Cal fashion show,
presented by the Office of Marketing &
Business Outreach. OMBO is the group which
manages the campus’ brand and engages in
cause‐related activities. Their mission
statement: “Promoting Excellence. Inspiring
Change,” is evident in today’s fashion show.
The Fabric of Cal is designed to highlight the
diversity of Cal. This year’s theme is “Making a
Difference” and we will be sharing stories from
our diverse and talented models. If you’ve ever
asked yourself, “What can one person do?” just
listen to these stories, and you will be inspired.
Even if it’s taking a few extra steps to recycle
that soda can instead of tossing it in the nearest
trash can, you HAVE made a difference!

We also want to provide you with information about our donors and how they
contribute to our local and global communities. We’d like to give a big thank you to the

My name is Devin Wicks, and I am your
host. I work at the RSF as the Director of
Fitness Operations. We provide world class
fitness and wellness programming,
including personal training, instructional
classes, employee fitness and wellness
programming through our WorkFIT
program, offering you the best opportunity
to get active and have fun on your path to
health and wellness.
I also work with various Cal athletic teams,
including some of the newest Cal Olympic
medalists, and I am the assistant coach for
the Cal Dance team which works hard at
every football and basketball game to inspire
Cal spirit. For the past two years, I’ve
organized the Cal AIDS/Lifecycle team
which includes fellow alums, faculty/staff
and Cal students. Together, we’ve raised a
combined total of over $120,000 for the SF
AIDS Foundation. Go Bears! !

Carol is the Alumni Relations and Events
Manager in Student Musical Activities, and
works with the Cal Band, UC Choral Ensembles,
and UC Jazz Ensembles. She works on behalf of
Cal staff by serving as a member of the Berkeley
Staff Assembly Coordinating Committee and the
Fund Raising Council.
In addition, Carol is participating in the campus
Leadership Development Program, working with
a team of seven other staff on recommendations
for “Green Computing” at Cal. Carol is wearing

organizations and staff initiatives!
Della, an Operations Supervisor for the
Payroll Unit of RSSP, is wearing a set of soft
green pajamas and non‐skid socks also
provided by Karen Neuburger. In her spare
time, Della works on behalf of staff in
planning the Cal Summerfest and has served
as treasurer of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority
(Solano Valley Alumnae Chapter) for the past
3 years.
Karen Neuburger is noted for its commitment
through KN Cares. KN has produced pajamas
especially for hospital patients and is a
partner of the Breast Cancer Research
Foundation. KN also supports women’s heart
health and reading programs for youngsters.

Next on stage, we have Daniel Sales. Daniel
is a second year majoring in Civil
Engineering. Daniel is also a life member of
the American Society of Civil Engineering,
and is active in the Hispanic Engineers and
Scientists and Multicultural Engineering
Prep.

diversity, art, and culture!
Valencia is a first year Social
Welfare/Mass Communications major
with a minor in Dance. That’s quite a full
schedule! She is publicity coordinator
and lead dancer for the Caribbean folk
performing dance company known as
“Sistas‐Wit‐Style.” This dance company
teaches dance to children, teenagers, and
adults, and educates people about the
culture of the Caribbean.

Allie Apana is a second year majoring in
Mass Communications. She is a member of
your Cal Dance Team, the Movement, and
Danceworx, as well as the Undergraduate
Mass Communications Association.

community in so many ways!
Shanita Dionne Talton is a first year planning on
majoring in Ethnic Studies and Social Welfare
with an emphasis on community, in the hope of
becoming an urban community therapist. A
former foster care student, Shanita is part of the
Cal Independent Scholars Network and plans to
use her experiences in the foster care system to
strengthen the community. This year, Shanita is
looking to pledge a sorority and become active in
the Black Campus Ministry.

Now, here’s Maureen Nungester, an
Administrative Assistant in
Procurement Services. Maureen is
active in elder care – helping to care for
a senior who needs a little extra help.
She also handcrafts jewelry which she
gives to elderly ladies, helping them to
feel beautiful and special.
Even though it may still feel like
summer, fall is on the way. Maureen is

Aurelia is a third year majoring in Molecular
& Cell Biology and Chinese. Aurelia gives

East Bay Consortium/California Student
Opportunity and Access Program, and as an

in Law. She is also a single parent who

programs, serving as a tutor in reading
and writing in various schools throughout
the Bay Area. Finally, Dianna works as a
volunteer for suicide prevention and on
behalf of battered women.

Rishi, a first year majoring in MCB.
Although only a freshman, Rishi plans
to continue the cancer research he
started in high school. Also, while still
in high school, Rishi founded the
Boulder Interact Community Service
Club which involves high school
students in community service projects.
He was also active in Boy Scouts and
volunteered as a cook in a homeless
shelter. We’re glad he chose to come to
Cal and that he plans to continue his
service activities. Cal has a long, proud
tradition of volunteerism, and Rishi
will fit right in!

Katherine, a second year Cal student

Danielle is a typical Cal student with a
wide range of interests. A second year
undeclared major, her other interests
include cheering on Cal Football as a
member of the Cal Dance Team and
serving as a volunteer with the
Regents’ and Chancellor’s Scholarship
Association activities.

co‐manager of the UC Women’s

her church.
