  • As you can see, I recalled the most dreams when my sleep was not interrupted. 13 dreams were recalled uninterrupted, 2 were somewhat recalled after receiving a phone call, 1 dream recalled after my alarm clock went off, and only 1 recalled when my sister woke me up.

  • Infinite Dreams By: Olivia Andrews
  • Research Question Why are some dreams remembered and others forgotten?
  • I Was Inspired….Have you ever wondered why sometimes youforget your dreams, while other times yourecall them as clearly as if they were real?Dreams have sincerely fascinated me in somany ways, but have raised puzzling questionsfor me and many other individuals. I decided todig a little deeper and uncover the mysteries ofmy dreams by immersing myself into the topic.
  • My 30 Day ImmersionFor my 30 day immersion, Ikept a detailed journal bymy bed side to record all ofmy dreams. I recorded all ofthe details of the dreamsand took note of when Iwent to sleep, when I wokeup, and how I was awaken. Ialso took the time to writedown my thoughts after theday was over to record anynew discoveries I may havecome across.
  • After the immersion, Irecalled my dreams 17 days What I Discovered total out of 30. My loving Noni dreaming away 
  • What I DiscoveredAfter reviewing the notes in my journal, Idiscovered that I recalled more dreams when Iwoke up naturally (ie: without an alarm orphone call or another person). When my sleepwas interrupted by someone else, I immediatelylost details of the dream or could not recall anypart of the dream. However, when I woke up onmy own, I was able to more clearly remembermy dreams and record them without any issues.
  • Dream Recall for 30 Days 14 Number of Dreams/Days Recalled 12 10 8 6 Dreams 4 2 0 No Alarm Clock Phone Call Another Interruption person How I was awaken• As you can see, I recalled the most dreams when my sleep was not interrupted. 13 dreams were recalled uninterrupted, 2 were somewhat recalled after receiving a phone call, 1 dream recalled after my alarm clock went off, and only 1 recalled when my sister woke me up.
  • Combination of Eight Hours of sleep being awakenwith an Alarm vs. without an Alarm: Study done by College students“This graph displays howpeople were better ableto recall dreams whenawoken without an alarmvs. with an alarm. The p-value is less than .05indicating that there is asignificant statisticaldifference of dreamrecall between beingawaken without an alarm Similar study done by college students at Miami Universityvs. with an alarm.”
  • What I DiscoveredSecondly, I learned that length of sleep does notnecessarily effect whether people recall dreams. There were times when I remembered dreamsafter sleeping all night, and times when I took anhour long nap and recalled my dream just aseasily.
  • Recording my dream at 6 a.m.
  • What I DiscoveredI also learned that the dreams I remembered werethe ones that I had just minutes before waking up.For example, when I took a nap, I had a verydetailed and disturbing dream about a grasshopperin my room. When I woke up from the dream, mysister said that I had been rapidly moving aroundand even made a squeaky sound just before wakingup. Then I told her about the dream anddetermined that my sister witnessed me having adream just before I woke up.
  • Grasshopper Dream Video: The Evidence Touch picture to play At the end of the video, click to move to the next slide. 
  • What I DiscoveredAnother thing I discovered was that some dreamsdo occur because of a past event. I recently had twodreams that related to an activity I had engaged injust a day or two before. The dream about thewedding dress shopping was related to the TVshow, Say Yes to the Dress, and the dream aboutthe grasshopper was related to the grasshopperswe dissected in biology just days before. I think thatwas very interesting that I had dreams related tosome of my personal experiences. This discoverysupports my theory that some dreams do have ameaning or purpose.
  • What I DiscoveredFinally, after immersing myself in this project, I learned that thereis not one single explanation of why we remember or forgetdreams, but there are many. I experienced that there can be quitea few reasonable explanations, such as depth of sleep, how aperson is awakened, or how drastic or dramatic the dream is. Iwill hopefully find the answer to this when I do my libraryresearch.During this experiment, there were times when I woke up andremembered having dreams but did not recall any of the detailsafter waking up. I wasn’t really sure why this occurred but I hopeto discover a reason for it in my research. Overall, it was reallyfun and interesting for me to get to know my mind better while itwas asleep. I have never considered what goes on in my headafter I lay down to go to bed. Dreams are a fascinating sensationthat I hope to share with my fellow peers and audience.
  • Final Thoughts About the Project• During this experiment, there were times when I woke up and remembered having dreams but did not recall any of the details after waking up.
