How does your media product represent particular social groups?
1. #3. How does your media product represent particular social groups? Evaluation
2. AGE: My magazine is mainly aimed at 17-25 year olds and this is why I have chosento use rather informal style of writing. I did this because if the language I used was too formal then people could lose interest and find the magazine boring to read. I tried addressing all the cover lines and especially my article in a very simple and chatty way to ensure that young people would stay interested and entertained. CLASS: My magazine mainly focuses on the working class and the middle class as these are the two classes that are the most common ones in Britain. I have tried making my music magazine appealing to those two classes in particular by setting the price of my magazine as it is a reasonable price that majority will be able to afford. Also most of the bands and artists featured in my magazine come from working class or middle class backgrounds so by choosing those classes as my audience I wanted to make them feel as close and equal to their favourite artist/bands as possible, because in the end they are or were to start with the exact sae people as them.
3. GENDER: I tried representing both genders in my media product, however with my magazine being more feminine there are slightly more feminine aspects in it, such as the colour red and orange that you can see popping up throughout my magazine and the flowery pattern on the front cover. Although some of the colours I used are rather feminine and bright, in order to keep it balanced I ensured that the rest of the colours used in my magazine would be gray and blue which are stereotypically seen as rather boyish colours. I also tried balancing the photographs out by having both male and female models but as I only had one real male model I had to add an additional picture of Tom Smith from one of the concerts that I went to in order to avoid making it all look too girly and have it still applying to the male part of my audience. The picture used on my front cover can be seen as rather provoking and seductive. The reason I made it look like this was to try to address it to the young adult males and females without having to use any of stereotypical rock and roll props such as alcohol, drugs or cigarettes and still get the effect of rebelliousness and wildness.
4. Ethnicity: The models used in my magazine and the artists that I have featured are all of white British ethnicity. However, when planning for my magazine I did not make a conscious decision as to only use white models/artists. I would like my magazine to be multi cultured because I think it is important that music magazines are aimed at different cultures and ethnicities because it is the talent and who we are that matters rather than where we come from. Social Groups: I have not specified who the social group for my magazine would be because I would like my audience to consider themselves as individuals rather than people belonging to some sort social group. The reason why I want them to differ from all the already existing social groups such as “emo”, “punk”, “goth” or “chav” is because they are more likely to be open to new genres of music and new artists rather than people who are in a social group as they might have a music taste that is limited to only certain artists or bands that I may not include that often therefore they probably wouldn't be interested in buying my magazine.
