    9. ANSWERS
      • QUALITY OF LIFE
      • 1 What is GDP?
      • Gross Domestic Product  - give a good definition
      • 2 Define Infant Mortality
      • The average number of deaths of children under 1 year of age per 1000 live births 
      • 3 How is literacy rate measured normally?
      • An average is taken of how many people can both read and write in a sample population 
      • 4 What is the connection between life expectancy and infant mortality?
      • If infant mortality is low, life expectancy is increased 
    10. INDUSTRY
      • 5 Name the four types of industry in an employment structure
      • Primary
      • Secondary
      • Tertiary
      • Quaternary 
      • 6 List four disadvantages that tourism can bring to a MEDC
      • Pollution
      • Over-crowding
      • Vandalism
      • Honey pots 
      • 7 Define the tertiary industry
      • Provides a service 
      • 8 Describe an ideal location for a steel making factory
      • good exporting location
      • good access to raw materials
      • near to a strong cheap labour force  space
    11. AGRICULTURE
      • 9 What is a subsistence farmer?
      • A farmer using all their produce for themselves, their family and/or village. There is no surplus to sell. 
      • 10 What are the differences between arable and pastoral farming?
      • Arable farming is the growing of crops and pastoral farming is the rearing of animals. 
      • 11 When was the common agricultural policy devised?
      • 1962 
      • 12 Define the meaning of diversification
      • To give variety to ?
    12. ENERGY
      • 13 Give three forms of renewable energy
      • Wind
      • Wave
      • Solar 
      • 14 What are the disadvantages of HEP?
      • Dams are very expensive to build
      • Areas of farmland and wildlife habitats may have to be flooded forcing people an animals to move
      • Unsightly pylons can cause visual pollution
      • Possibility of damn collapsing
      • Decaying vegetation in flooded areas can release the greenhouse gasses, carbon dioxide and methane
      • Silt that was previously spread over farmland will be deposited in the lake 
    13. Energy Continued
      • 15 Why are wind turbines not a more successful solution to global warming?
      • Visual pollution
      • Expensive
      • Not very efficient, they are no use when there is no wind 
      • 16 Why is nuclear energy disapproved of?
      • Not clear how safe it is
      • Irish Sea is increasingly contaminated
      • Non-renewable
      • Potential health risks
      • Cannot be used for two of industry’s major demands (heating and transport) because costs are too high
      • There is less demand for energy by industry
      • Nuclear waste can remain radioactive for many years
      • The cost of decommissioning old power stations is very expensive 
      • DDD = decommissioning, radioactive decay, dangerous explosions
    14. The End
      • Don’t forget to include as much detail as you can in your responses.
