Noam Chomsky defined the formalism of a phrase stru more
Noam Chomsky defined the formalism of a phrase structure grammar in 1956, later known as Context-free Grammar (CFG), in an attempt to represent Natural Language grammars--specifically English. He showed that context-free grammars are more expressive than regular expressions. He remained inconclusive on whether a CFG can be written for English, or for that matter, any natural language, such that the grammar so written will recognise all grammatical sentences in that language and only them. Modern consensus is that natural languages are not context-free. However, it has been established that large parts of natural languages are context-free. There have been successful attempts at representing such forms as CFGs. This paper describes an attempt at a CFG equivalent to Ezutthathigaaram of Tolkaappiyam. less
