    • + Digital newspapers UX evaluation Eesti Päevaleht vs. Õhtuleht 05/04/2013 Authors: Merje Meisalu & Olga Sorokina
    • + Introduction. Background info  Eesti Päevaleht launched their digital newspaper at the beginning of 2011 and was first in Estonian media landscape, htuleht followed year later.  Eesti Päevaleht focuses itself to offer the ground for serious debates and opinion stories. htuleht offers softer content and news, it could be seen as Estonian tabloid.  In Õhtuleht reader can comment articles and it has search engine, also it has on-line news, design looks a bit like Metro Style. Eesti Päevaleht has interactive game inside, but other interactions is limited (no comments, no search engine, no links), for reading is player in use, design looks like high quality pdf documentdoes.
    • Goal of research: + To find out Eesti Päevaleht typical readers’ expectations to digital newspaper and which of the two digital data presentation approaches [Eesti Päevaleht and htuleht] meets these expectations better.
    • +  People expect additional features and interactivity from digital newspaper.  Person is more satisfied when he/she can solve task/get information faster. Hypotheses  Approach of digital newspaper htuleht suits better for typical Eesti Päevaleht readers rather approach of Eesti Päevaleht.

    • + Target: To collect ethnographic digital newspaper subscribers  Form: Survey form was created by Eesti Ekspress Group. The form consisted questions about age, education, job, reading habits, residence of readers etc.  Online survey Participants: Survey form was sent to 5300 Eesti Päevaleht digital edition subscribers. 869 answers were received 
    • + Age: 40-49 years old – 29% 30-39 years old – 27% 50-59 years old – 21% 20-29 years old – 12% Others Education: Graduated – 67% Secondary – 32% Others Online survey Statistics Location: Tallinn – 49% North Estonia – 24% Tartu – 9% Others Profession: Professional, specialist – 37% Middle level manager – 19% Own business – 11% State officer – 7% Others Most popular tablets: iPad2 – 49% iPad3 – 31% iPad1 – 10% Samsung Galaxy Tab – 8% Others – 2%
    • + Online survey Results Typical subscriber is.. .. highly educated 30-59 years old, professional or middle level manager from Tallinn or North Estonia, read digital newspaper as from desktop as from iPad
    • + Target: Validating and prioritizing wishes about functional and design part of digital newspaper  Form: Prepared form in Estonian, consists of 7 questions about participants background, their reading habits and previous experience of using digital, online and paper newspapers; 15 openended questions about expectations and desirable features and 9 questions to evaluate offered features on Likert Scale  Semi-structured interview Procedure: Interviews were performed face-to-face; answers were scripted and after analyzed by authors of research  Participants: 11 interviews were carried out. All of participants were from target group which was identified during online survey. All of interview participants have at least some experience with reading digital newspapers, but only 2 (18%) of them are subscribers 

Users wants to see same content but cheaper than in a paper and a bit better design (easy to read) navigation rather than in online editions

    • + Target: Evaluate satisfaction of wishes features in both newspapers  Procedure: Task for performing were base on results of previous research. Every participants should be completed almost tasks on Eesti Päevaleht and Õhtuleht, while completing participants evaluate task by choosing one of most suitable emocards.  Participants: 10 participants were invited to research. All of them were from target group. Participants were not subscribers of digital newspaper, but regular readers of paper, digital and online editions. 4 participants performed tasks on tablet and 6 participants performed tasks on PC. Correlation between laptop users and iPad users were same as was found during semi-structured interviews. Participants who performed tasks on iPad were well familiar with tablet PC.  Emocards

    • + Insights:  No participant solved task finding older issue in Eesti Päevaleht using PC at all  Time of finding answer in article was shorter on Eesti Päevaleht but participants were not satisfied  Even if execution time of finding photo gallery was same, Õhtuleht gifted better emotion  Eesti Päevaleht doesn’t have links Emocards Results to similar articles  Task 5 was similar to task 3, but created different emotion. It means that learnability of this feature in both applications is high.

    • Need to change: Eesti Päevaleht has put much effort developing its digital newspaper so far but much has to be done to meet user’s needs • Speed of downloading should be improved. There should be possibility to download issue without videos for quicker downloading • Perform usability check as in tablet as in desktop as in laptop with small diagonal, and solve exist problems • Digital newspaper should be cheaper • Less focus from interaction applications inside issue, but support basic links to previous articles
