Is it possible to recover the connectionbetween us, humans, and nature to which we belong?The unsustainability of current civilization is rooted in a dominant, consumerist and wasteful lifestyle. It is also rooted in a model of economic growth unrespectful with the limits of the planet:A model based on the unrestricted consumption of raw materials, water, and energy in a globalcontext of information and communication networks. Blind faith in eco-technology has madeus believe that decoupling nature and society is possible, and that the degradation of forests,rivers, oceans and the loss of biodiversity do not affect our wellbeing. However, a denial of therelation between human welfare, ecosystems and biodiversity leads us to collapse.Global change needs social changeOur rejection to accept a finite ecosphere triggers the unwanted effects of the process ofglobal change, from the local to the regional level, and to the functioning of the Earth system.Current policies are focused on minimizing those unwanted effects or negative impacts -changes in the use of soil, climate change, overexploitation of fishery resources, contaminationof soil, water and atmosphere- rather than dealing with their causes. However, causes areultimately associated with individual patterns of consumption. The challenge of Global Change

is not to stop or suppress it. The challenge is to manage it: To influence strategically itsdirection and conditions to anticipate and adapt in a sustainable manner.The promotion of a sustainable lifestyle is not easy in an urban planet where global citiescontinue to develop and grow. Cities do not make easy to establish the connection betweenconservation of nature and human wellbeing, the urban lifestyle and the unintendedconsequences of Global Change. The hiperlocal dimension of social networks allows toestablish the connection that cities draw invisible.We need to learn to live with change without degrading essential ecological processes thatsupport life and determine human welfare. We also need to get society entangled andcompromised. Global Change requires individual change to achieve social change.Social networks for participation and empowerment: I tell tomyself when I tell it to youInternet facilitates the creation and access to non mediated information. This happens whilesociety perceives that institutions are unable to respond to systemic crises properly. Enabledby the power of organization and mobilization of social networks, citizens are assuming aleading role and calling for new paths of participatory democracy. The power of the emergingsocial movements is amplified by networks on the Internet.Cyberculture is associated with new values and attitudes, from sharism, to supporting eachother, and empathizing with causes on social networks. Permanent connectivity canstrengthen the most positive traits, such as reciprocity, peaceful dialog, solidarity, cooperationand tolerance for diversity. The key is not technology but new individual attitudes allowing todevelop social capital. New social capital is therefore a great opportunity to manage theproblems associated with global change.To what extent social networks reflect the population opinions and feelings about theunwanted effects of global change? And, to what extent social networks reflect the individualresponsibility in promoting or prevent it? While the environment becomes valued, particularly indeveloped societies, a review of some of the social networks reveals an unsatisfactory reality:(1) Environmental issues are on a secondary place in thematic social networks;(2) Climate change is the only field well represented between those related to Global Change.(3) Low connectivity between users aware of environmental problems strongly limits thevisibility of communities. The Media and specialized organizations do have and retain thestronghold role. (4) Topics related to global change in some of the most widespread social networks show alow level of individual attention, compared with topics such as economic affairs, sports orpolitics. The pattern of interactions show little conversation and spread of messages related tothe unwanted consequences of global change.Where are we going, or where we should goOur proposals on where we should go are focus on the improvement of the links betweenhuman welfare, ecosystems and biodiversity. These proposals are based on the empowermentof the individual and its transforming capacity to promote social change based onparticipation, social responsibility, open innovation, transparency and education.Empowerment has to include the humanization of the networks: the inclusion of humanemotion and empathy. Empowerment also entails spread of ideas through social networks witha huge capacity, for the first time in history, for almost instantaneous transformation.

Public institutions have a big challenge in such context to recover public trust and to manageglobal change in an appropriate manner. A paradigm shift could be necessary in order toestablish mechanisms for participation and collaboration of actors in society. Promoting opennetworks and open platforms oriented to reach creative solutions to solve people problems isan opportunity for institutions as well as firms.For citizens, being on the Internet means a change in personal identities and socialconnections. It favors the emergence of new areas of interaction, where rights and duties arestill fuzzy. Companies also face significant challenges when new actors interested in limitingthe negative impacts associated with Global Change pressure to reorient their corporate socialresponsibility. For both citizens and companies, being on the Internet implies a different levelof collective connection; a level with a social and political impact --which can well affect theircivic engagement. Related to the promotion of social innovation by citizens and companiesthere are transforming examples, such as electric power energy produced in homes andbusinesses geared to the connected social grid. Another example is open innovation based ontransparency and open data on environmental issues. Citizens can take advantage of thebenefits of social networks to identify problems, to take actions, and to create spaces forparticipation.In relation to education, it should include values as the importance of the link between natureand society, it should promote empathy and digital literacy --especially among children andyoung people; and it should question absolute faith in environmental technologies.We need a net-evolution, to change from techno networks to human networks; to change fromnetworks of information to networks of emotion and commitment; and to change from socialnetworks to sociable networks.#Let´schange!Málaga, Spain, May 2012The International University of Andalusia (UNIA) belongs to the university system of Andalusia.
