Lung Cancer Facts<br />Lung cancer is the number-one cancer killer in the U.S., accounting for about 28% of all cancer deaths<br />Less than 4% of federal dollars spent on cancer research are spent on lung cancer research<br />Lung cancer claims approx. 160,000 lives per year. It is a devastating disease that can afflict anyone, regardless of gender, ethnicity, or smoking history<br />Lung cancer impacts 1 in 14 Americans<br />65% of newly diagnosed patients never smoked or have already quit<br />

Lung Cancer Facts<br />Lung cancer kills almost twice as many women as breast cancer and more than twice as many men as prostate cancer<br />Lung cancer currently has no effective, widely used early detection test, yet if found early, lung cancer can be treated<br />The five-year survival rate for lung cancer is currently under 15%<br />Rates among non-smoking women are on the rise<br />

Who is LUNGevity?<br />LUNGevity is the largest private funder of lung cancer research, and will grant up to $2 million in 2011 to lung cancer researchers focused in two areas, early detection and targeted therapies<br />LUNGevity’s Lung Cancer Support Community is the largest online lung cancer network, providing user with an extensive message board, the latest lung cancer information, 24-hour support, a telephone buddy program, a card circle program, and notice of lung cancer event and advocacy opportunities<br />

Who is LUNGevity?<br />LUNGevity supports the largest national lung cancer grassroots events programs<br />Other LUNGevity services to the lung cancer community include: LUNGevity Link UP, online advocacy training, and LUNGevity-GRACE’s Ask the Experts, an online Q&A forum and educational services to help interpret complex medical information and terminology<br />
  6. 6. Who is LUNGevity?<br />LUNGevity held 25 grassroots events in 2010<br />Will be holding those 25 in 2011 plus 9 new events (ours is one of them!)<br />

Some Basics<br />Event date: November 12, 2011 10am (registration begins at 9am)<br />Location: Greenfield Lake Park<br />Cost: $25 Adult / $20 LC survivor / $15 age 60+ / $15 Student / $10 youth (under 13)<br />Prizes will be awarded to top three fundraisers & top three fundraising teams<br />
  9. 9. My Elevator Speech<br />“Hi, my name is April Morey and I am one of the volunteer coordinators for the LUNGevity Breathe Deep 5k, benefiting Lung cancer. This is our first event in Wilmington and we are holding this walk because in October of last year I lost my sister to LC at the age of 37. LC is by far the least funded cancer, yet it kills twice as many people as breast cancer and more than twice as many men with prostate cancer. The five year survival rate is under 15%! I am working hard to honor my sister and others affected by LC in our community and I need your help. Would you consider being a sponsor / volunteer / walker?”<br />

Event Logistics<br />Needs:<br />Tents, tables, chairs, logistics for music<br />Medical personnel<br />Detailed map of 5k<br />Help with set up and break down<br />Manages event-day volunteers<br />Coordinate event parking<br />Prepare map of event day site, including parking<br />Packet pickup night before?<br />Make sure registration forms are available day of<br />Water & snacks at rest stops along path<br />Find location to store supplies until day of<br />Keep all walkers in order at registration table<br />Make sure all people who registered day of get a t shirt (others get one if there are enough)<br />Stress legibility on forms<br />

Participant Recruitment / Fundraising<br />Tasks:<br />Ensure everyone has a common goal in mind – to raise funds for lung cancer research<br />Pre-event, event-day and post-event fundraising<br />Activate fundraisers!<br />Recognize & congratulate participants & fundraisers (pizza night for top fundraisers?) – don’t just talk to people when you want them to give money!<br />Show financial need (LUNGevity)<br />“In 2011, LUNGevity raised enough money to fund up to $2 million in new research – but more than $12 million was requested!<br />
