A long time ago Swami Vivekananda was also asked the same question: Which Religion is the best?

To which he had remarked 'Mine, mine”, is always the cry, never “thine, thine”, and so religion has devolved into a tribal fight.

This quarrel over religion, he said, was just like 5 blind men trying to ascertain what an elephant looks like. See link for his full story:

The religions of the world appear very different from the outside, seperated by widely different rituals and mythology; but underneath they all have the same aim - to propel us Godwards and to make us better human beings. Therefore we are totally free to choose which ever religion we like because they are all designed to accomplish the same goal.

The Best Religion?

  1. 1. Dialogue Between The Dalai Lama and Dr Leonardo Boff The Best Religion?
  2. 2. The Dalai Lama, a Nobel Peace Prize Laureate is a great spiritual and Buddhist Leader. He is the Author of many spiritual books.
  3. 3. Leonardo Boff, a Brazilian Theologist is one of the renovators of the Theology of Freedom.
  4. 4. In a round table discussion about religion and freedom in which Dalai Lama and myself were participating at recess I maliciously, and also with interest, asked him :
  5. 5. “ Your holiness, what is the best religion?”
  6. 6. I thought he would say: “ The Tibetan Buddhism” or “The oriental religions, much older than Christianity”
  7. 7. The Dalai Lama paused, smiled and looked me in the eyes ….
  8. 8. which surprised me because I knew of the malice contained in my question.
  9. 9. He answered: “ The best religion is the one that gets you closest to God.”
  10. 10. “ It is the one that makes you a better person.”
  11. 11. To get out of my embarassment with such a wise answer, I asked:
  12. 12. “ What is it that makes me better?”
  13. 13. He responded: “ Whatever makes you more compassionate, more sensible, more detached, more loving, more humanitarian, more responsible, more ethical.” “ The religion that will do that for you is the best religion”
  14. 14. I was silent for a moment, marvelling and even today thinking of his wise and irrefutable response:
  15. 15. “ I am not interested, my friend, about your religión or if you are religious or not.
  16. 16. “ What really is important to me is your behaviour in front of your peers, family, work, community, and in front of the world.”
  17. 17. “ Remember, the universe is the echo of our actions and our thoughts.”
  18. 18. “ The law of action and reaction is not exclusively for physics. It is also of human relations. If I act with goodness, I will receive goodness. If I act with eviI, I will get evil.”
  19. 19. “ What our grandparents told us is the pure truth. You will always have what you desire for others. Being happy is not a matter of destiny. It is a matter of options.”
  20. 20. Finally he said: “ Take care of your Thoughts because they become Words. Take care of your Words because they will become Actions. Take care of your Actions because they will become Habits. Take care of your Habits because they will form your Character. Take care of your Character because it will form your Destiny, and your Destiny will be your Life … and …
  21. 21. “ There is no religion higher than the Truth.”
