  • 3. ............................................................................................................................................................................................... GRAB AS MUCH DATA AS YOU CAN Combine with any/all other trusted link data sources. De-dupe.
  • 4. ............................................................................................................................................................................................... Make sure you include it. (you can now download all links by date discovered)
  • 5. Sorting Your Data
  • 6. ............................................................................................................................................................................................... USE SCREAMING FROG TO SEARCH FOR LIVE LINKS 2 – Set custom filter to search source code: 1 – Change mode to ‘list’ 3 – Load a list of URLs: http://www.stateofsearch.com/understanding-link-profile-1/
  • 7. ............................................................................................................................................................................................... USE SEOTOOLS FOR EXCEL TO RUN THE SERVER HEADER RESPONSES Keep all this juicy data safe!
  • 8. ............................................................................................................................................................................................... USE SEOTOOLS FOR EXCEL TO PULL IN DOMAIN LEVEL PAGE RANK =googlepagerank(A2) http://nielsbosma.se/projects/seotools/ Ensure domains are de-duped first!
  • 9. ............................................................................................................................................................................................... THE END RESULT IS AN EASY TO FILTER DATA SET
  • 10. “It’s pretty much the same as outreach only less fun.” Me.
  • 11. ............................................................................................................................................................................................... KEEP DETAILED RECORDS Keep old records in new tabs Work in Excel - Use Google Docs for collaboration.
  • 12. Tips
  • 13. ............................................................................................................................................................................................... EXAMPLE OUTREACH From: oliver.mason@clientdomain.com or alias@123fakestreet.com Subject: http://off-endingurl.com/here/ Body: Hi {name/leave blank}, http://off-endingurl.com/here/ Who would be the best person to contact regarding this url? I’m hoping to get the link to our domain ({insert linked to url here}) removed, would you be able to help? Looking forward to hearing from you, Oliver {client footer if appropriate} Have situational templates, tweak heavily
  • 14. ............................................................................................................................................................................................... THINK. How can I best approach this? Does the webmaster know these are potentially poisonous links? Would I do better to play dumb? You are offering these people nothing. Most will ignore your first contact. Chase up - it works (you linkbuilders know what I’m talking about). It’ll save you trouble.
  • 15. ............................................................................................................................................................................................... POTENTIAL OBSTACLE #1 “YOU COULD BE A COMPETITOR” “And now a days, we are getting many removal requests from the competitors itself. For example, if I am your competitor, I’ll e-mail all the webmasters who link to you asking to remove the back-links. Thats why I wanted a proof (like an official e-mail id), to start the process. And not only that, now a days, people are faking the address. The e-mails sent by these bad competitors look like they are sent from the company. I will remove all those links, if I receive a reply to this e-mail (coz people cannot fake receiving e-mails) Thanks, {name}” Good thing you aren’t a competitor.
  • 16. ............................................................................................................................................................................................... POTENTIAL OBSTACLE #2 “WHY THE HELL SHOULD I?” Great example from @thogenhaven: “Dude, if you spammed my blog, why should I spend my time cleaning it up for you? I think you should have thought about that before you spammed me. Link stays.” They’ve got a point.
  • 17. ............................................................................................................................................................................................... POTENTIAL OBSTACLE #3 “SURE, $2 PER LINK” Whether you pay or not, record their email to you. If you do decide to go down this path, be careful. Some magic words: “Great, I crawled your network and we only found the links on those two pages, so it shouldn’t be too much work!” Seems reasonable, but tread carefully.
  • 18. “Directories are dead” Some other SEO’s
  • 19. ............................................................................................................................................................................................... Don’t you just love all those partner directories? Use templates, use plugins. Their authentication systems often go down. Source “link id=xxxx”
  • 20. ............................................................................................................................................................................................... Stuff you can’t* clean up
  • 21. ............................................................................................................................................................................................... Things you buy from fiverr…
  • 22. The Viagra SERP is pretty interesting.
  • 23. ............................................................................................................................................................................................... Auto-splogs, Abandoned Splogs, Auto-directories*
  • 24. ............................................................................................................................................................................................... Places you want the link, regardless of metrics. Removals that aren’t worth the PR hassle (client/affiliate relationships etc).
  • 25. ............................................................................................................................................................................................... Anything you can’t find. (or contact*) *http://tools.seogadget.co.uk
