  • 1. Video Databases & Shape Modelling for Sign Language Live Image Gesture Recognition
  • 2. Purpose of Gesture Recognition
    • Create a software interface that will interpret Irish Sign Language from live video
    • Interface will work on a medium range PC using a USB Webcam
  • 3. Creating Gesture Database
    • Principal Components Analysis (PCA) used to compress sets of gesture images
    • Differences between images stored in the database as a 3D point
    • Movement of the arm forms a continuous curve on a 3D graph
    • Database will be hierarchical, with similar gestures grouped together
  • 4. Comparing to the Database
    • Acquisition one image at a time from the video source
    • Extract arms and head from the image by using skin colour segmentation
    • Compare image to the Database to match up arm and hand position
    • Interpret the gesture and display to the interface
  • 5. Next Steps
    • Increase accuracy of Database matching
    • Speed up image manipulation algorithms e.g. finding arm position
    • Create the Interface software
    • Develop Interface backend, including the Database framework, in a low level language
    • Convert all scripts and code to the one language
