      Dred Scotts Fight for Freedom
      • Dred Scott was born in Southampton County, Virginia .
      • property of the Peter Blow family.
      • Dred Scott and the Blow family moved in 1830 to St. Louis, Missouri .
      • because of financial problems, the Blow family sold Scott to Dr. John Emerson, a doctor for the United States Army.
      Who Is Dred Scott?
      • Emerson traveled extensively in Illinois and the Wisconsin Territories, where the Northwest Ordinance prohibited slavery .
      • During those travels with Emerson, Scott met and married Harriet Robinson, and Emerson met and married Irene Sanford.
      Who Is Dred Scott Cont.
      • John Emerson died in 1843.
      • John Sanford, brother of the widow Irene Sanford Emerson, became executor of the Emerson estate.
      • Scott filed suit to obtain his freedom in 1846 and went to trial in 1847 in a state courthouse in St. Louis.

      • It was one of the most important cases tried in the United States.
      • The two trials of Dred Scott in 1847 and 1850 concluded with a U.S Supreme Court decision 1857, and quickened the Civil War.

      • Dred Scott could not read or write and had no money.
      • The Scotts went through eleven years of disappointing litigation.
      • Scott tried again in federal court in 1854 against John Sanford.

      • Scott appealed to the U.S Supreme Court.
      • The chief justice that gave the majority opinion of the U.S Supreme Court was Roger B. Taney.
      • He agreed that Scott should remain a slave.

      • Dred Scott was not a citizen of the United States and had no right to file suit in federal courts on any matter.
      • Taney said that slaves were personal property.
      • Which proved the Missouri compromise of 1820 unconstitutional.

      • Scott died of tuberculosis on September 17, 1858 and was buried in St.Louis.
