 To identify the use of punctuations in direct speech. To spot the use of reporting verbs and its tense in direct speech. To change comics’ dialogues to direct speech by using different reporting verbs.

A recap:- Capital letters (Brunei, Amalina) Exclamation marks (No!, Help me!) Commas (I want sugar, butter, and bread) Full stops – marks an end of a sentence.

 Punctuate the sentence below:- i am hungry I am hungry.

 Now, try this one:- dad i am hungry Dad, I am hungry.

 Let’s try another one:- dad i am hungry said john“Dad, I am hungry”, said John.

A direct speech is a sentence carrying the quote of someone else as it is and it includes a reporting verb. DO NOT CHANGE WHAT WAS SAID Direct speech: “Dad, I am hungry”, said John.

 Punctuate these three sentences in 3 minutes:-1. i do not want to see you again shouted nadzirah2. why did you tell her that asked liyana3. I just changed the bulb two days ago sighed rafie

 Answers:1. “I do not want to see you again!” shouted Nadzirah.2. “Why did you tell her that?” asked Liyana.3. “I just changed the bulb two days ago!” sighed Rafie.

Do not put a comma after ? !

Can you think of any other examples of reporting verbs?

are always in Past Simple Verbs.

“How can you just lay around in the clover all day!!?”, shouted the chicken.“ The world is your OYSTER!!”, the chicken exclaimed.

 Continue the story – complete Group Activity 1 worksheet. Discuss with your group what reporting verbs will you use. Make sure to use different reporting verbs.

 Rewrite the sentences as direct speech. Write your answers on a manila card. Complete work within 7 minutes. Use different reporting verbs for every direct speech. Choose a leader.
