• A lot if things will be covered here. It can be quite overwhelming. However, the take away for this tutorial is for you to learn more about searching and at the end, search more effectively then you are what you can do now.
• Support endnote only. Show them my endnote database. Show links to pdf, show how it can quickly insert citations
• Introduction to some of the useful tool you can use to search
• Example (OR)
• Example (AND)
• Example (NOT) Order of operations. Some follow some don’t follow so the best thing to do is to use what we call parenthesis
• Poverty reduction in Thailand
• Take note: no standard notation for truncation and wildcard. Some use star for truncation and ? For wildcard and some is the otherway around. So rem to check the help file before searching.
• Poverty OR poor AND reduction
• (poverty or poor) and (improve$ or reduc$) and Thailand and (poli$ or regul$ or legisla$) and (government$ or state$ or public) Example of synonyms, broader/narrower terms, related terms and possible search phrase
• (poverty or poor) and (improve$ or reduc$) and Thailand and (poli$ or regul$ or legisla$) and (government$ or state$ or public)
• correlations stock exchange stock market oil price petroleum Impact
• As I’ve mentioned before, to search for journal articles, you have to use resources that specifically indexes the content. Publisher website versus databases.
• How to access them -popular -search -browse
• Hands on for EconLit
• (poverty or poor) and (improve* or reduc*) and Thailand
• Limits: don’t use the Limit full text if possible
• Good idea to talk about the habit of saving your search history for future references
• (poverty or poor) and (improve$ or reduc$) and Thailand and (poli$ or regul$ or legisla$) and (government$ or state$ or public) Example of synonyms, broader/narrower terms, related terms and possible search phrase
• Include author search demo at search fields too
• You can use boolean and
• (poverty or poor) and (improve$ or reduc$) and Thailand and (poli$ or regul$ or legisla$) and (government$ or state$ or public) Example of synonyms, broader/narrower terms, related terms and possible search phrase
• Refining results
• Hands-on : Finding the poor in Thailand
• Browse. By no means exhautive
• To search newspaper articles Do note that they do not go very far back in scope
• Searching Factiva – hands on
• (poverty or poor) and (improve* or reduc*) and Thailand
• Why would you want to search theses. To get your hands on the references behind relevent titles
• To search thesis add
• Of all the search query that we get, the most frustrating ones would always be for statistical data. There is no one good source of statistics. You have to know what you are looking for in the first place and that who would be interested in wanting them. They have a rather interesting property: You see them everywhere, but when you try to find them, they seem to disappear altogether. Even if you are lucky to find the statistics, it might not be in the form that you want.
• The other main competitor is datamonitor Other EIU databases are similar in interface. EIU Citydata, provides city level data, Tokyo, New York etc. Data sets include Price of annual school tution, price of cornflakes, tooth paste, haircut, road tax, baby sitter hourly rate etc. EIU countrydata has a fairly user friendly interface, provides comprehensive geographic coverage and a fair number of statistics series (if you include EIU citydata and EIU market indicator and forecasts it is excellent) . It’s main weakness is it’s coverage only extends from 1980 onwards as such as not good if you need > 25 years for econometric models. However you will get *something*, yearly data from 1980 exists for almost all 150 countries. Analysis using eviews , spss
• EIUcitydata – statistics on cities like Tokyo, New York, focusing on cost of living mostly. Price of tution, road tax, housing etc
• So in this section, rather than demoing some statistical databases that you might not even use, it would be more like a session of
• Often free. One time I had a query asking me to find FDI (foreign direct investment) inflows of Vietnam by sectors from 1988-2007. I searched all the commercial databases, but in the end I found it in the general statistic office of vietnam! Last resort, you can try emailing the body, they might reply.
• Print is important source if you are looking for statistics from earlier periods (1970s?) Most countries have annual “year books”, similar to singapore’s yearbook of statistics. Also can search with keywords but more hits. Also works for topic statistics. Example Oil industries -- Statistics
