    • Help you do your research:
    • Information on MLE4101 B.Eng. Dissertation as taken from dept web site :
    • “ Every student majoring Materials Science and Engineering is assigned a research project”
    • This tutorial is designed to help you do THE project
  • Learning Outcomes
    • Be better at doing research:
    • use the best source/s (better than Google Scholar) to look for current information
    • Understand citations in reading list, etc.
    • Know more about LINC+
    • Know more about Library services
  • Outline
    • Doing research
      • Indexes of current information
      • Search statements

  • Search Statement 3. Formulate your search statement biomaterial* AND (dental OR tooth OR teeth) 1. Identify concepts 2. . Think of alternative term/s for each concept Use of biomaterial in dental applications Concept 1 Concept 2
  • Boolean Operators
    • OR is used to indicate that either terms may be present
    • AND is used to indicate that both terms must be present
  • Truncation/Stemming
    • Biomaterial * retrieves biomaterial and biomaterials
    • Fluorid * retrieves fluoride , fluorides , fluoridation , etc.
    * is used to truncate/stem the term
  • More on Search Statement
    • If your search statement retrieves no records
    • E.g. you need articles on membrane reactors , but you can’t find hits
      • Use a broader concept/term like “ Bioreactor* ” instead of specifically “ membrane reactor* ”
      • Look through references listed at the end of such articles
  • Sources of Information
      • Current
        • Last week
        • Last month
